I was reading that the state is trying to develop triploid Dolly Varden hoping that it would be predatory in lakes that have been over run by fish that are predators of trout....anyone else heard similar rumblings??? I fear another problem would just be created by this, but it is intriguing. Any thoughts??

Personally I haven't heard anything about triploid Dolly Varden, however, we are using tiger trout for that purpose in some of our high lakes. Tiger trout are a cross between eastern brook and brown trout. We are evaluating them as a replacement for the brown trout program. These trout are pretty intense as far as trout predators goes.

I will post back if I hear anything on the Dolly Varden issue.

If I said I knew of a lake where there's reputed to be tiger trout, what might I be "plied" with to get me to pass on that knowledge.

I haven't fished the lake either. Just know that there's supposed to be tiger trout in it.

Also, the stocking reports, fry or regular sized trout, don't reveal this data.

I don't think bass fishermen came to be because of cross-breeding... hmmmm... why do I think the Trout Master is setting me up with this one.

I think bass fishermen came to be because they haven't evolved far enough to become trout fishermen.

One starts with catfish, then progresses to bluegills and bass, and then on to trout. Eventually they also learn the limber rod is the proper way to angle for trout.

I don't know why they would want such a fish. When I fished in Eastern Wash a few years ago. My buddy caught a 18" dolly and when he cleaned it it had a 6" rainbow in it's stomach. Back in the good old days it was legal to keep them. If all they do is eat, then they will eat everything in the lake including Trout. eek

We have tigers in our Forlorn Lakes in SW Washington. They are used a lot of the time to prey on stunted fish species. In some lakes they can get up to 30 lbs. I got that info from a hatchery in California that uses them to control stunted fish populations. They seem to do a pretty darn good job at it!

To understand Micro Brew, you have to achieve a higher level of enlightenment, perhaps with a nice porter or IPA. He will be venturing into the desert for a little meditation. Hopefully he will find his destination before dark - those scorpions can be exciting.... No snakes at night though.

The thought of a 30 pound predator in a lake is an interesting thought. It presents a whole lot of new possibilities.

Maybe they can also be used to control perch, bullheads, sunfish and other scrap fish??

Micro,

Congratulations on achieving "returning adult" status. You have left your humble smolt beginnings behind.

So, if I read your message correctly, are you going fishing this weekend? Lenice and Nunnaly???

I got bit up by something this weekend that I'm still itching about. It didn't seem to be mosquitos as I had too much other area available to where they didn't have to bite thru my socks.

Ron said he got blood poisoning from one of his trips from the bites. I'm thinking the same thing bit me all over my ankles.

Oh.. ticks are bad over there right now. I had a fisherman pull 3 of them out of his hair in front of me one afternoon. Gave me a bad case of the heebie-jeebies.. and I was scratching and checking all over.

Email me and let me know what your weekend plans are. I tried to send you email and private email and you aren't set up for it.

No problem on running from the banjo music, although ZL's post already has me scratching and doing tick checks. BTW, don't forget the belly button, had a friend find one there while he was in a sauna....

When will you ever experience real fishing??!!??
If you think that a 30 pound fish in a lake is big...you dont know what big is!
Where I live...we have had 40+ pound Rainbows caught and Sturgeon to 1800 pounds.
Close by there has been 70 pound lake trout caught. cool

I read about Triploid Dolly Varden in an article about Triploid trout last weekend in a fishing "insert" that I picked up in Manson. I wish I had kept the article and brought it home.

Zen. They could be fly bites. Deer flies get real big. I got bit by one up off the S/fork of the Snoqualmie about a week ago It swelled up to about the size of a .50 piece and itched alot. It bit me thru my pants. rolleyes
