Am going to be fishing the Skagit river, from shore, on Wednesday. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to go, what to use, and what time of day is best?

Thanks in advance!

JK

Not sure on the where ... but from what I've heard plunking with eggs , sandshrimp, and smaller pink spoons has been working for people. Let us know how you do.

Try fishing from Lions Park, it is right in Mount Vernon. Take the College Way exit off of I-5 and go left twice. The park is right by the Chevrolet dealership. It is a lot like Metzlers Park on the Green River. Lots of trees and trails.

Expect a crowd unless you go during the week and always fish the incoming tide.

I have used pink spoons with good success. The most popular method is plunking with sand shrimp right on the bottom.

Make sure you dont over cast, most of the fish are within 15 feet of the shore.

Good Luck!

Hey guys,

Thanks for the info!

I went up to the Skagit near Mt. Vernon on Wednesday morning. We had a great time, hooking six Humpies and catching five between 7:30 and 10:30 AM. While most people on the sand bar we were fishing were plunking, we caught ours on Pink Humpie Spoons and Silver and Pink Pixie Spoons.

Too bad I won't be able to go again for another two years.

Hi Smolt: I cant help with the Sgagit but one post was dead right;Pinks run day and night close to shore in water about 4 ft deep in modest currents. They seem to particularly like gradual sloping shorelines of small gravel.
My favorite gear for these beauties is a 8 wt flyrod with a centerpin reel loaded with 8 lb mono ,a 1/2oz float and a bubblegum coloured wool lure or a spey fly with pink wings and a sandhill crane hackle.
If you keep your gear light pinks can be a blast. They are an excellent training ground for beginning flyfishers.

Congratulations on your success John! I hope my tips helped. I am new to Humpy fishing too. I am lucky to have a good, experienced friend to show me the way of the Humpy on the Skagit.
