You can never go wrong with any color variation of the Carey Special. I prefer green or peacock for my first choices.

Chironimid nymphs work and do Gold Ribbed Hare's Ears.

I'm trying to keep this basic for you so you don't get overwhelmed from info.

The Carey is an old pattern and many don't use it these days. But it works for me when on occasion I tie one on.

What Zen said, but I would add leech patterns ( a black Carey will do), damselfly nymphs ( a thin-bodied, green-olive Carey will do) and some gray nymphs, say #8 or #10 for the callibaetis hatch on the lakes nearest Cheney. Scud patterns would also be a good idea.

You might also check out the book Flies of the Northwest published by the Inland Empire (Spokane) fly club-- it's got lots of good, local patterns.

I also like carey specials, but my favorite lake pattern is a burgundy or maroon wolley bugger.

Ooops, I forgot to mention I like a little krystal flash in those wooley buggers.

I was trying to keep it simple for him before I threw in the different leech and woolly bugger variations.

I use crystal flash in the tail and about half the time a flashabou lateral stripe on mine. A little extra flash sets the flies out from the pack.

I started using Zonkers last november in gray and olive and they produced well fished off the bottom and with quick short strips. laugh
