Long time lurker, first time poster here...
I am looking to get into the stillwater fly fishing gig, and was wondering if any of you experienced fly fishers had a recommendation for a sinking line. I was thinking probably a type 2 uniform sink. Couple of questions. 1) Is a uniform sink line better than just a normal sinking line? 2) Would it be worth it to get a clear, or camouflage type line? Also, I have a 5 weight rod and had someone recommend that I overweight to a 6 weight line. Is that necessary?

I live in North Bend so will probably be fishing Rattlesnake lake this summer, and I'd like to hit some of the more famous eastern wa. lakes this spring. Thanks for any replies, and tight lines!

I'm not sure about the clear or camo lines, I've never used them, but i really like the uniform sink lines. I have a six weight type III uniform sink line from SA that I use most of the time. If you are fishing the shallows it seems like a clear line type II would make more sense. Hope this helps.

You'll actually need several lines to match various fishing conditions you'll encounter. But your instincts are correct, if I had to get one I'd start with a type II, uniform sink. I started out with a type III, that will get you down for most situations. Then I added a type I, which you will definitely need for shallow E. Wash lakes. Then I added a stillwater line, that I love, and basically sinks like a type II.

...while some people recommend stepping up a level for dry lines in order to load the rod better, I'd recommend you stick to a 5 wt. in the sinking line--they're quite heavy as it is and the extra weight would only overweight your rod. I used to use a 6-wt dry line on my 5-wt, but that was when I was using a cheap line...most modern lines are pretty well balanced for the rods they're rated for.
