can anyone give me a how-to on plunking for springers. what to use on the hook end of the setup?

last year there were quite a few guys plunking in march for springers on the lower cowlitz doing a fair amount of catching.

so im heading down with a couple buddies on monday to give it a shot with a couple buddies.

With a bearing bead, above a full, cured prawn, stretch string to keep the shell from flaring and an internal toothpick to keep it straight.
Oh, you thread the prawn with a "needle" fashioned from spinner wire, called a "prawn threader"....it's a Pro-Cure product.
That's how I see the geezers that catch, do it.

A prawn with the patented, ultra-slooooow, Polak spin can be devastating on Chinook but when you're plunking you are usually dealing with some good current so keeping the prawn as straight as possible is very important so it doesn't spin wildly out of control.
When it does that they know instantly that there is a fool on the other end that doesn't know sh!t.

I troll a thinfin with a couple of cheaters to float the prawn tail above the bottom.

That will work plunking too.

I see them using whole, cured prawns most of the time.
Cheaters are good, too, but I see a lot of Spin-N-Glos.
The Thinfins were all the rage when they first came out....good attractor, still popular.
I would keep a close eye on my line where it rides, however.

Yup, only one springer allowed per day.
One needs to check and sharpen the hooks, replace the leader as needed.

Sometimes it just depends on where your fishing.

Not that many years ago, there were more than a few guys successfully plunking the Icicle River (actually more like a creek) using (I kid you not) RAILROAD SPIKES for weight and cut plug herring for bait behind a very large metallic corky. What a cluster that was. A serious zoo with guys plunking and drifting the same few (very few) holes. Still kinda fun in a carniverous close combat sort of way when the run was strong.

Icicle aside and depending on what bait's allowed where I'm fishing, it's generally herring early and low in the system followed by eggs and shrimp higher up and later in the season.

Plunk a wobbler like you would for CR fall chinook. Seen some guys do this quite successfully for springers in the tribs.
