Hopefully there is minimal loss of life, but from the video I just saw, the death toll will be pretty high. I hope I'm wrong.

With a 7.4 aftershock half an hour later...they're telling people in Hawaii to get to higher ground NOW!
This could be ugly in Tokyo.
Fish on...

NW coast now added to the Advisory list.............
...THE TSUNAMI ADVISORY IS EXPANDED TO INCLUDE THE COASTAL AREAS OF WASHINGTON - BRITISH COLUMBIA AND ALASKA FROM THE OREGON-WASHINGTON BORDER TO CHIGNIK BAY ALASKA...
RECOMMENDED ACTIONS A TSUNAMI HAS BEEN GENERATED WHICH IS EXPECTED TO CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE WARNING AND/OR ADVISORY REGIONS LISTED IN THE HEADLINE. PERSONS IN LOW-LYING COASTAL AREAS SHOULD BE ALERT TO INSTRUCTIONS FROM THEIR LOCAL EMERGENCY OFFICIALS. EVACUATIONS ARE ONLY ORDERED BY EMERGENCY RESPONSE AGENCIES. - PERSONS IN TSUNAMI WARNING COASTAL AREAS SHOULD MOVE INLAND TO HIGHER GROUND. - PERSONS IN TSUNAMI ADVISORY COASTAL AREAS SHOULD MOVE OUT OF THE WATER... OFF THE BEACH AND OUT OF HARBORS AND MARINAS.
From the pics we're seeing I wouldn't want to mess around with this one!

ETA for Wa coast 0715. ETA for Hawaii 0500. Just heard on KOMO radio they are starting to evacuate Westport and Long Beach area (Pacific Co). Advisory for most of Wa coast but a watch for Or/Wa border area. 1-10 feet-Hopefully 1 foot and a non-event! Pacific County officials are recommending residents move to high ground in response to a tsunami spawned Friday by the largest earthquake in Japan's history: Pacific County recommends residents move to high ground

Waves were supposed to start hitting the WA coast around 7:15 am, so far no reports of any increased surf.

My baby sister and her husband live in Tokyo right next to the water. Around 11pm last night phones calls started coming in from family wondering who had talked to who. Luckily both are OK and recouping from the tramatic event.
My sister was on ground level when the big one hit. She was afraid to go into her building as it was swaying pretty wildly. That and her husband was stuck at work with no way home due to the trains being shut down. Got an email this morning that both are OK and have found each other.
The Japanese people are accustomed to withstanding a little ground shaking now and then. Even the children seem very nonchalant about events that would make someone from the midwest piss their pants. When you see the Japanese children crying and worried, you know this one is something different.
They both stressed things are crazy in Tokyo but much, much worse futher north. They have many friends who still have not made contact with family and loved ones up north.
Thoughts and prayers to those in search of family and loved ones.

Glad to hear your sis is OK, SW...good news, that.
They just upped the toll to "at least 1000"...and I just saw video of a trashed marine in Santa Cruz, with boats upside down...
Fish on...

Thanks Todd.
Scary moments last night for sure.
Japan is a, if not one of the most, resilient countries in the world. Digging out of disaster is nothing new to them.
Just hope this lastest historical event didn't cost the country too much in the way of human life.

If there's any good news about this, it's that the death toll has not exceeded the order of hundreds as yet, which seems almost miraculous to me after watching the live footage of the tsunami moving inland last night (and considering the population density of Japan). It was horrific. The last time I watched something on TV that made me feel that way was 9/11. I fully expected that we would be talking about thousands upon thousands of deaths.
And yes, as secondary in importance as it seems right now, this will not do much good for the world economy. For now, let's count our blessings and hope our coastline doesn't sustain any serious damage. Just read one report that said there was to the tune of 80,000 people missing? But who knows what's truth and what's not. That's some wild stuff over there... Keith
