A Muckleshoot biologist has already said that there have been four times as many Sockeye passing through the Ballard Locks this year compared to four years ago.

You can check how many Sockeye are moving through the Ballard Locks on a daily basis. The numbers so far compared to last year and the year before do not look good. frown

Hey Easy,

You know, if it does open, thats great.
Sockeye is my favorite!!
But at the same time I don't think I
wan't to risk damaging my boat or
getting hung up all day because of every
swingin' d!*k who owns a boat on the
west side of the state will be out there
for those three days of the season.
It's rediculous to even have a so-called
sockeye season. They ought to have
a raffle, say several hundred fishermen
get tags. Kinda like hunting.
Maybe I'm just still bitter from the last
sockeye nightmare.

Ya, I know what ya mean. And we got skunked the whole time when the season was last open. mad

I have heard WDFW is going to be making the big decision on sockeye season on July 10th.

It is unbelievable! The worst part is most of the guys out there have not had their boat in the water since the last sockeye season. There would literally be 4 or 5 guys fishing in a boat and no one steering the boat. A lot of close calls and tangle fishing line. Oh well, I can say I participated in the largest urban fishery in the U.S.

I thought it was a riot, all those fools out on the water. I remember years ago fishing Possession Point in August and having the same crowds of boats, plus having to deal with the tide. Once on the water I didn't think it was too bad really. Now the boat launches, that was bad! But I have a wife who was cool enough to come along and drive off with the trailer, then come back when I called her on the cell phone. Now that's easy launching!
I can only remember a few close calls on the water. I tended to fish the middle where people weren't and caught my limits without too much trouble.

At least Sockeye you can catch virtually anywhere on the lake. When the kings were in strong about 8-9 years ago, everyone knew the one place to catch them was off Sheridan beach. Talk about packed, but at least these were fishermen and not wanna be's.
WDFW had such an increase in license sales you would think they would be all over a spawning channel. Guess most of there time is consumed by figuring how not too break even.
