I pick my boat up Sat. And I'll spend the weekend looking for walleye and bass.

But I have an interest in fishing the sound. And landing my 1st Salmon.

I moved over from Spokane WA a year ago Aug 1st. And I know the eastside lakes very well.

But I have not even ever put a line into salt water.

What tpye of pole do I need. Do I need down riggers? What about tackel? Someone said I should get GPS, should I?

Maybe this is to much to ask here. And maybe I will learn as I go.

But like fishing Elliot bay over the next few weeks. Where would I launch, What would I use for bait ?

What other type of equipment do I need on the boat?

Thanks for all the info!!!!!

there are two boat launches around there

one around West Seattle and Shilshoe which is a alittle bit north. Good luck.

Congrats on your boat purchase! Like I read somewhere else in this forum BOAT means Break Out Another Thousand. laugh You will be sinking (pardon the pun) a lot of money into your new boat until you get it just the way you like it.

As far as saltwater tackle goes here is what I use:

1. Start with a green or glow 11" Hot Spot dodger. What you put behind the dodger is up to you.

2. I like white/glow hoochies (great for Elliott Bay and south Sound) or 4.0 Coyote spoons behind my dodger about 20-30". If I am not catching fish on my first two choices then there are not any fish to be had. laugh You can also use herring.

3. When you are out on the water and you see people catching fish ask them what they are using. Chances are they have found something that works in that particular body of water and use it.

I hope this help you out!

Get downriggers. They open up alot of doors to big fish fishing. Don't settle for manuals. Electrics are so nice. They get your stuff up quickly and out of the way, a must for fighting big fish. One day we hooked 37 salmon in one day and i had manuals and my arms were so sore from that, besides all the hassle of up and down and up again, it sucked. That was the day i switched to electrics. Buy Scotty brand electrics. They have the fastest retrieval and the lowest battery drainage of any brand. They are $279 at sportco. Compare that to a nice Penn brand and your looking at close to a $1000 smackers. No comparison!

In regards to the question stated in your subject.... A pole, line, and hook do well out here. Sometimes adding small things, like weights, bobbers, bait, etc. etc. etc. help to catch more fish.
