Monday at the not so secret lake there was a sight that was so cool to watch. There were thousands of brown dragonflys laying there eggs and the MONSTER trout were leeping out of the water to nail them. The sad part was they would not take anything else. On Sunday we did great as the night had been cold (frost) on the ground
got ten fish none smaller than 20". The water level has dropped about 1.5' since spring.
We will be back in acouple weeks. laugh

Hey TM, you sure those weren't Damsels?? If there were thousands or even hundreds
of them they were probably female Damsels, as Dragons are not prolific and the trout
rarely key on them.
I ran into one of those egg laying events on Blue lake several years back. The huge trout
were trying to knock them out of the air. I had an imitation so realistic that the male
Damsels came down and tried to breed it. But I got NO FISH on it as I couldn't make it
hover like the real ones.
I hung a Chironomid under an indicator 2' deep where they were working and got an
occasional fish though.
Glad to hear you did well after the cool night. I didn't go to Bonaparte as planned, I went to Blue and got great chironomiding Sunday and Monday. Monday afternoon the hatch seemed to
peter out so, I left early with 8-10 fish, some to 20" most 15-17". Sunday must have got
25 or so all day in 20-25MPH winds.

F.F. yes they were dragons, not the blue and brown damsels which were also everywhere. I did pick up some fish sunday on damsel dries. It was really amazing watching the dragons getting nailed
anywhere from 2" to 2' above the water. That is the best thing about fly fishing , even if you dont catch something you still get to see the rainbows in there best form. laugh
Oh yeah I know a dragon from a damsel. Plus the
dragons looked like 747's compared to the Cesna's that the damsels looked like in size. laugh

Last year around this time I too watched trout catch air for dragon flies. Was an amazing sight. We didn't have a good match so we took a black sharpy and colored muddler minnows and were able to catch a few before they got to heavy. Had a good time just watching them. It must be like a steak dinner to them.
