Saw this on another forum, thought I'd ask it here to see the different opinions.
Which do you prefer, slip or solid and what size hooks and spacing do you prefer.

For me it would it be solid tie and 3 inches with 4/0 hooks for greens and 4 inches for blues with 5/0 hooks

Solid 4/0 and the trailer at the tail. I don't tie them until i've seen my bait.

I am currently tieing 3/0 4/0 black gamis on 25 flourocarbon. Egg bumpers with 8 on top and 5 on the bottom. The bottom hook "sticks" the back of the hand while tieing the top one.

Solid tied with enough spacing to let the hook hang back 2 inches below the tail of whatever sized bait I am using. 5/0 hooks, usually a gammy octo.

When I'm fishing the beach I tie my leaders solid at the beach after buying my herring. The size of the hook stuck through the nose of the herring and the spacing is critical to the size of the herring bought--- the size changes week to week.

I prefer a slip,for fine tuning a slow roll.

I broke off too many fish years ago using slip rigs. It creates a dent in the line which damages it. Better to tie your hooks up to the right length with solid ties.

For the pre-tied ones, the only ones that seem to have the right spacing are the Gami's, although I always tie my own now.

Ahhhhhhhhhhh...the "dreaded" dent.

I dent the Salmon population, not the other way around.

Have never not had a preference to my knots, over anyone else's.

Solid, tied when I have the bait in hand...so that the trailer hook, well, trails.

Fish on...

Blue label=4/0-5/0 3" spread.
Good luck,

Solid. Used to spread the hooks 4 to 5 inches until fishing with FNP. Now I tie 'em about 7 inches apart, ala "hangback."

What about for hootchies?
Do you use that "hangback" with them?
I am using 2/0 3/0 tied about the width of my hand apart.

I don't use a mooching leader on hoochies.

I tie on a # 7 swivel to the end of my leader. I then slide either a twinkle skirt (trolling) or a small corky (beach) followed by the hootchie. I then simply crimp on a huge siwash.

The reason you hang back is for short biters. A short biter will nip the tail of a herring that's why my hook is right at the tail. The hook is in their mouth before they even get the tail. Same with a hootchie. The hook should be back enough to hook em if they are just nipping at the tenacles.

Very important for fishing whole herring and getting that big ol slow chinook roll which is so often the ticket when plug cuts aren't getting it done. Even more critical in cold water.
The key to good slip ties is to make them VERY tight so they are tough to get to slip. You want the fish to have already hooked itself by the time it slides. #30 dacron and pliers are good tool to get a tight top hook.

I used to run long trailers behind the tail of my herring for short strike'en ho's and other salmon. Then went back to the shorter spread and have have better hook to land ratio since doing so.Good luck,
SZ

PS,While using the cut plug for over 25 years the spread between the hooks had alway's been a mind fuk.I'm back to shorter last year and this year.

I get the roll by pinning the bend in the herring with a toothpick so it does not matter if I use a solid or a slip. I pin the back hook on the bottom of the herring wrist just through the skin to hold it in place. Use big hooks mooching is not finesse fishing shy fish.

I guess I'm doing it all wrong again.

Fixed leaders for both cut plugged or whole herring.

There's no need for anything that slips if one cuts and rigs a cut plugged herring correctly. Hook size and gapshank between the hooks is dependent on the size of bait you are using. Usually, that's a 3/0 or 4/0 hook.

There's no need for anything that slips if one puts the hook in it's proper place and location on a whole herring. Hook size and gapshank between te the hooks is dependent of the size of bait you using.

I like the bottom hook to be at or near the tail of the hern when rigged with either.

That hangback crap is for the birds and Doc. wink I'm out to kill ALL salmon when using herring. I want to them to GAG on it and DIE! DIE! DIE!

Choke on this, you kingbitches!

Don't matter if that back hook is buried in the hern or not. Sometimes I do, sometimes I dont.

As others have pointed out, I do run my hootchie rigs with a trailing hook well beyond the skirt of the hootchie...for those damn "nippers". ChinookNippers MUST DIE too!!!!!!

All hatchery kings MUST DIE!!!!
