Dredge with small buggers and thin leeches if all else fails...

Lakes with steep bottom lines aren't the best ones for chronie fishing. Ones with flats and better yet... mud flats are the ones that produce more chronies. I'm assuming your "nids" are what I'd call chronies.
The leech suggestion was best for fishing a deep lake early in the year. Leeches are bigger and better seen or felt by fish... and.... an obvious food source for early in the year. March 1st in the seeps what I usually see in stomach samples are leeches... and the little pindot sized shrimp... or diatoms.... In any case they are about a #32. Leeches would be a very good fly this early in the season.

Daddy You are pretty much pissing into the wind fishing a food poor lake in Jan. or Feb.with any flyz. The fish respond to the law of "Conservation of Energy" That means that if there is little or no food in the water they don't swim around aimlessly looking for it, burning up stored fat. w/no results to show. The law holds true for early spring too. It's why trout will often not be caught trolling till much later in the year than stillfishing. Like the wine taster who says "drink no wine before its' time" the flyfisherman sez" fish no flyz before it's time."
And heed the word of the great and all knowing Zen. Don't expect to do well chironomiding on a deep lake with rapid dropping shore contours.
I'd suggest if you wanna get your Chironomid graduation certificate, you will go fish Rattlesnake Lake in the area of the stumps in 5' to 10' water in the month of May.

You should give BBVD a tip if you did that good. Doesn't sound like it's a chronie lake... but leeches should work there.

Dutchman: Each lake is different. If there is food in the water they will bite regardless of time of year. My guess is though that your fish waz caught on Accccck, POWERBAIT, the smell if which would lure any fish to its death regardless of conditions and thus it should be OUTLAWED! My humble opioion.

Zen my ole pal: When the scientists got back the microwave pictures of the big bang from outer space they discovered huge amounts of dark matter. In fact DARK MATTER rules.
That's what keeps pulling you toward the DARK SIDE and makin you say the "P" word. Grab onto your flyrod, meditate, and resist with all your might man. Hate to see ya sink into the hole again this year.

Nope... not gonna say the "P---" word this year. Not going to! But I did get a set of 100 assorted Colorado blades from Cabelas this last week for using for walleyes over at O'Sullivan. And.... a box of Tony Chachere's cajun fish breading.... First trip may be in March. I've been thinking of starting another thread giving some chronie info along with the tip that in early spring chironomids make up about 85% of a trout's diet.

Please Please guys continue to cast no fly before its time. Thinking like that is what gave me the entire lake to myself.AND IT WAS GOOD!! By my fourth fish Iwas laughing grinnin and singing(badly). Why? Because:the lake was all mine,The fishing was great. So please I implore all of you continue to "cast no fly before its' time. I must confess one of those fish was taken on A olive bunny leach. All of the others were taken on the other FLY. :p
