Fished Omak Lake on 2/26......calm wind, hazy sun, but cooooold. Water temp 38
warmed to 39 afternoon. Started 8AM, drug leech for 20 min...no results. Anchored up
and dunked a bloodworm pattern I pirated from a guide over here. Got into
fish immediately and from 8:30 to 11:30 caught 17 Lahontins to 3# or so all
on the bloodworm in 7-10 foot of water.
Hatch of #16 black chrionomids started around 10 and bloodworm bite tapered
as it hit full swing around 11. Switched to a pupa and could get no bites on
Pupa??? Twas a massive hatch though.
Blew my theory that major chironomid hatches don't start till water hits 42. Not So!
Oh, and as usual, I fished ALONE all day... the usual for Omak Lake
Most underfished good fishing lake in the State.

Fnf, thanks for the report. Omak is high on my list to fish this year. A 17 fish day is a great day no matter what the month or water temp is!

I fished Omak about 1 month ago. My best day (out of 3 days fishing) was 6 fish, most on a brown bugger. The guy I was with fish chironimids w/o success. Water was real cold; had to break through about 1/2" band of ice to get to one cove.

One afternoon I was turning over rocks to see what insects were in the lake and I found probably the fewest # of insects I have ever seen in a big fish lake. Probably explains why the fish were so skinny. Not quite spawned out, looking but still sorry.

Interesting lake though. I'll probably head back later in spring.
