My brother Noel joins us for the Wed am bite and bangs one of the prettiest fish of the trip on a diver and bait (his second fish that am). Chalk up another one for Amerman eggs and the Tequila Sunrise (same winged Cheater that I caught my all time best king with in 2003).... talk about pretty girls eek :

Noel finished the evening bouncing up the biggest rainbow of the trip.... this colorful hen is nearly steelhead sized!

Does it get any better? How about whipped cream and a cherry on top? Here's another spectacular sunset to cap off the day:

Gotta agree with you vhawk... that was THE money shot of the whole trip. It's got everything I look for in a great fish pic.... clarity, color, composition, and CHROME!

I think it's STS cover material, but Nick says he'll only accept images taken with slide film for a coveted STS cover.

Then Amato is a turd if he doesn't at least look that shot over. Its a freakin classic. I don't care if the Amatos' are the only NW fishing publishers. I'll thumb wrestle his ass into submission.

Its the color fish porn shot that got them where they are today. 'Cause it sure ain't the quality of the writing. Half of the books that have come out of Amato Publishing, read like they came out of a 10th grade english class. And not the 'A' students either.

God I hope an Amato reads this.

Well boys, I just sent a sample copy of that pic to Nick at STS, and also to Troy Letherman of FishAlaska Magazine. We'll see who bites first.

Man, my brother would sure be stoked to grace the cover of either publication.

Man, you hit it on the head with your comment regarding the Amato publications. I have only read 2 or 3 of their books, but they were all second or third editions and the spelling, grammer and incomplete sentences that grace the pages is unbelievable.

Tenth grade "C" students is being quite generous!

Hey Doc,

Tell Nick to have Cathy look at that image in Photoshop and pull a proof if they have doubts. Doesn't matter if the file came from film and was scanned or was captured electronically. All he needs is 300dpi at 8.625" x 11.75". They're probably not used to the quality of image that you're capturing coming off of "snapshot" digital cameras.

I used to lay out their covers and do their scanning at Color Excel in Portland before they even did their own desktop publishing. Spent an afternoon showing Cathy how to lay out their publication on the Mac.

Beautiful pics!! Gorgeous Kings!! You're making all of us jealous - thanks for the reports and pics!

Thanks for the words of encouragement. I sent the raw 2.2 MB file that measures 2288 x 1712 pixels to Nick for Cathy to look over. I would imagine that resolution should easily enlarge to a quality 8.5" x 11" print.

I have a 675 KB (that's only 0.675 MB) version of my 2003 king that measures 2272 x 1704 pixels. I had it enlarged by a local processor to an 11" x 14 " print to hang in my office. It turned out awesome with ZERO pixellization.

Pic #5 is the most interesting. The winged cheater is the exact same color and pattern as the rainbow trout. Look at the pic again. It's remarkable. thumbs

Great pics all around! Hope you get one of them on a mag cover somewhere. FishAlaska mag might be your best bet.

I find it interesting that winged cheaters are the rage in Alaska but niether GI Joes nor Fisherman's Marine sells them in the Portland area. I was up in Soldotna in early June and Trustworthy Hardware was selling winged cheaters in bulk. Can't find that around here.

Hey Doc,

Unfortunatly those pixel dimensions are only good for about a 5.5" x 7.5" reproduction in offset print production. It needs to be 300 dpi at the size it will be used at. Turn up the res on that camera for your potential mag cover shots - your compositions and lighting are usually beautiful so I'd think you'd get some Cover usage if you can turn up the res. What you need is in the neighborhood of 2588 x 3525 pixels or better for a full-bleed 8.5 x 11 cover shot. I'd be happy to go along on your next Alaska trip to provide technical assistance and modeling services laugh

Photographic prints usually only need 150 dpi (depending on process) which is why your enlargement looked fine.

Whoa! Is that really what it takes to make it in print media if submitting digital images? I have a 4 MegaPixel cam that delivers an effective 3.9 MP at 2288 x 1712. That's the max setting, and that's all I ever use.

It would take an effective 9.1 MP camera to deliver your quoted resolution of 2588 x 3525. Do they even make one that big?

Here's my favorite C&R shot from last year, courtesy of my brother's sharp eye behind the camera lens. I briefly used a small version of this pic on my tag line, but here's the bigger version:

Looking back, I should have posed this fat hen against a little more island greenery in the background. That would have given it a lot more class.

Doc don't be so hard on yourself, the picture SMOKES!......you can see how strongly that plump bovine missile is gonna rocket away from you. Damn next year I may have to hide in your luggage and hire myself out as your personal sherpa so I can tag along! wink
