"It's crazy. Absolutely crazy," VandenHeuvel said. "We're importing expensive oil and proposing to export inexpensive gas, which will make the gas companies rich and harm almost everyone else: Homeowners, whose gas bills will go up. Manufacturers, who will lose the competitive advantage of cheap gas. And anyone who buys products manufactured with natural gas."

Anything this crazy has to be rooted in political gain. WOW!

it seems US policy to attempt to level the trade deficit is to export raw materials (logs, natural gas) instead of protecting manufacturing jobs. it's one thing to export finished goods, it's another to export raw materials. one is something a first world country does, and the other is what third world countries do.

"In February, ConocoPhillips closed the country's only functioning LNG export terminal, a 40-year-old Alaska facility that shipped to Japan, citing a lack of customers. After the March earthquake in Japan raised LNG prices worldwide, the company shipped a few more cargoes, but has said it still plans to close the terminal"

Why the hell would they build a new export terminal down here under these conditions if it wasn't to raise domestic prices.

"This is the bastard marriage of our oil industry and the financial industry," said Paul Sansone, a former energy company executive and LNG opponent who lives in Gales Creek. "All along, the goal has been getting gas to be like oil; to break up these regional markets and have a world price so they can speculate on it."

Gas industry consultants like Pickering say that's not the way it would work. He acknowledges -- as industry analysts have -- there would be some price increases. But the industry says the main advantage would be to stabilize gas prices at a higher level and encourage more shale production. Increased supplies would keep a lid on prices, they maintain, while improving the U.S. balance of payments and creating jobs.

A Bastard Marriage is right! Between the good folks who brought us the 2 Gulf Wars with the Weapons of Mass Destruction lies and the fine upstanding people who gave us the housing mortage mess and the credit card scams. I wonder what the offspring will look like?
