Hank, traditionally it's been a nickel tip for bad service - lets the wait person know you didn't forget the tip and took the trouble to remind them the service was severely substandard. Putting the coin in the bottom of the water glass is a nice touch though.

Wonder how this tipping determination came about however.

Tips have become an expectation when they should only be for service that is above and beyond.

Not my wife, i have to make sure I tip after she leaves the table, otherwise she'll pocket part of the tip I give to our server, because she feels I was too generous.

That subject is always a tripwire to an argument...

I was brought up with "You take care of those who take care of you"

Pretty simple.

I tip well
My wife tips better

I like it.

waitresses, mechanics, co-workers, friends in general, sometimes complete strangers, it's all good.

Hank, when you leave a dime, the waitstaff considers that generous, coming from you. Which is why I reminded you of the tradition for expressing disappointment with the service.

You do raise an interesting point however, regarding additional tips when the establishment includes an automatic gratuity. A lot of restaurants do that for groups, and I didn't notice it on my bill and added another 15 to 20%. I stopped doing that because the service, while good, isn't 40% good.

I usually tip in the 20 to 25 percent range, unless the service sucks...but if you automatically charge me 18 or 20% gratuity, or even a "delievery charge" on a pizza...well, you get nothing more.

Good service = good tips.

Expect a good tip, or God forbid, just go ahead and charge me one, then you get nothing more than that bare minimum.

I most emphatically do not need someone to add a gratuity onto my bill to remind me to tip the staff.

Fish on...

Todd
