I hit Merwin at the crack of 11:30 Saturday morning and after donning the rain gear headed into the main body of the lake and turned right after leaving the Spellyai launch. Having no idea where to go or what might be working, I dropped 3 lines in the water and trolled toward a group of boats about 1/2 mile away.
Rod 1: 45' down off the DR, rigged with a 4/0 chrome dodger/snubber, hot pink Apex Kokanee Killer and shoepeg corn scented with anise/sand shrimp oil.
Rod 2: 25’ down off the DR, rigged with a 4/0 chrome dodger/snubber, chartreuse/green Apex Kokanee Killer and shoepeg corn scented with anise/squid oil.
Rod 3: 35 pulls and rigged with a 1oz weight followed by chrome pop gear and red bead/chrome blade wedding ring spinner and unscented shoepeg corn.
It took about an hour to troll out to the group of boats with very few hits. Once we reached the boats I started marking fish on the sounder and action picked up. After some experimenting I switched all baits to the anise/shrimp scent and dropped the chartreuse Apex on Rod 2 in favor of another hot pink one and started trolling the new setup at 40’. The next 2 hours were non-stop action on all three rods with some periods so hectic I couldn’t keep the lines in the water. Overall it was a successful day with fish ranging in size from 10’-14’. Although the DR’s produced more and larger fish the rod trolled at 35 pulls did reasonably well too.
