I have been hunting with a couple of goose obsessed guys for a few years now and have not needed my own spread. I am looking to branch out on my own considering I have access to a nice field/pond situation only 5 minutes from my house. I have been hunting ducks there for 15+ years with good success and shooting many geese when the opportunity arises.
Looking to buy maybe 12 or so good quality deeks, hopefully they are not $100 a piece..

For floaters big foots are the best, Rodgers has them for $100 per 4 free shipping. For land decoys Zink avian X Honkers are the best for the money. There about $240 per 4.

B.m. - I will be down your way this weekend hunting geese and flying solo if you wanted to meet up for a hunt I run DSDs as they are the best for what I want to accomplish, but you should be able to get birds within range using just about any decoy. I hate Avery products with a passion because of the lack of quality control... if i were in your situation I would watch Craigslist and pick up some used DSDs or hardcores. shoot me a PM. -David

the best thing to do would be save the money, buy a half dozen dsd honkers and call it good. they are expensive, but you can get them used at a pretty good price. if your exclusively hunting over water, you wont need more than that. quality, not quantity. as far as floaters, big foots are simply the best. avery is nice, but cheap.

Will be hunting in a field (harvested corn). What makes the DSD's so much better? just curious...

realism. They flat out look like live geese. Put your decoys on goose poop, the call in your pocket and hide well. You'll kill birds.

well, goddammit! your talking me into it. we'll have to get together and hunt the field I was telling you about. A lot of birds work that general area.
think I will buy a 1/2 dozen if I can afford it. try to buy a few each year...

you can probably get by with shells or cheaper fullbodies if you want with the amount of birds that you say are there. Again coming back to what you are trying to get out of the hunt.

There are a decent amount of birds but they do get pressured by surrounding farms and a near by hunting club. I alraedy have a dozen shells and a few floaters but the shells are horse crap. nothing like having those birds come in hot...

Cabelas has a sale on the Avian X full body goose decoys for $119 per 6. They need some mods to make them work right, but you wont find a better deal on a decoy that looks like a goose.

Without question the DSD's... I'm not a goose nut and don't own decoys but will happily hunt over the DSD's with any invite..
All hunters under estimate the realism of decoys and the eyesight of the birds working you. I've hunted over some Columbia River Duck Decoys in a well known heavily hunted spot and we slayed them. Without a doubt it makes a difference...
But, I will say if you're one of those lucky guys that get's to hunt private land where the birds aren't seeing much it doesn't seem to matter with the lower quality decoys as we've all pounded limits in those places...

If you bend the stands a little and put some screws in the heads they work just fine. You "shouldnt" have to mod decoys, but the price cabelas is selling these decoys at reflects it. You would also need to single bag or get a slot bag for them, rodgers sporting goods sells a 6 slot for about $27, tough to beat.
I love DSD but NWIFH would pay that kind of money for a decoy...I would have zero issue though dropping $500 a dz on Gutherie orig CRD's
