Hey all, i've been lurking around here for couple months, and finally decided to post and ask a question.
I have a 15 foot or so Coleman Scanoe (not exactly sure what the length is)

I really want to get a low budget electric trolling motor to add to my fishing arsenal. I have been looking at the Minn Kota with the 30lb thrust. I'm pretty sure that this will push my Scanoe around, but I was also hoping someone around here would be able to offer any advice along those lines. Am I correct in guessing that 30lb thrust with a decent deep cycle battery will move the scanoe, with two alduts?

I fish lake washington more often than most places, but have been up to Ballinger and Lavender, and trying to hit most of the smaller lakes in King County.

Thanks in advance, and Hello to everyone out there...

Martin

30 pound thrust should be fine. I have a 40 lb thrust on my 15' aluminum boat which weighs around 1200 pounds with two anglers. If you go to the probassshops.com web site there is a guide for trolling motor thrust for bass boats. But you'll be fine with the 30 I think.

I had a scanoe (old town model) and put a 34lb thrust motor on it. Worked great.

Wait until spring and Costco will (usually) carry them at a great price. Grab one (about 130 bucks) and 2 of their Kirkland brand deep cycle batteries (a spare is always handy - especially if you fish big windy lakes....).

laugh I fish from a coleman crawdad that displaces a lot more water than a scanoe. I have a 32lbs thrust minnkota with a costco battery and I can fish 12 hour long with no problem. You should be fine.

PS if you don't have one by spring let me know I plan to get a new minnota. Mine still works it just makes strange noises. I'll let it go for a tall frosty one. beer

Thanks for the fast responses folks.

I was kinda figuring it would be fine, but you can't have to much information.

I found some at GI-Joes the 30lb thrust is going for $109, and the 55lb thrust is going for $219 (or so)
so if all goes good, I'll be fishing with a bit more ease this weekend.

this is really the first season I've been able to fish in Washington waters, and I'm really enjoying it. I moved down here from Alaska a while back, and finally got the fishing bug back in me. thanks again for the advice.

Martin,

I hope I'm not too late.

I have fished my canoe with a 30lb thrust for many years. I would advise that you get one that has variable thrust and not the standard throttle with the preset speeds usually 1 thru 5. I found that even at 1, the slowest, it still moved my canoe too fast-especially for Sockeye. Many times the perfect speed is when you can count the prop reps.

I've always carried two battaries not because one would poop out but mainly to offset the weight and keep the bow down.

I have been in lake wa in acanoe fished along the bridges Till the wind came up. a bit scary with three foot wind waves. I enjoy fishing from the canoe but big water can be dangerous. I use a costco thirty-eight thrust electricon the canoe and my livingston works great.
