Seems to be the slow time of year for this forum so I thought I would cheer everyone up with the latest on what's happening at Diamond Lake which is located in the Central Oregon Cascades. Just west of spectacular Mt. Thielsen. Diamond has been an excellent trout fishery since the early 1900's but in the late 40's or early 50's somebody introduced some Tui Chubs and they went into "reproductive hi gear" and over ran the lake. In 1954 the lake was rotenoned and they had excellent fishing and water quality for 40 years.. but then in 1992 or 1993 somebody caught one of those dastardly Tui's and by 94 or 95 the lake was overrun again........
I can recall reading a story in the Oregonian about the lake back in 98 or 99 and they were debating whether or not to rotenone it again. I can also remember dismissing the debate as a waste of time because the eco-freaks are never going to let them use rotenone in that kind of environment so I've ignored it until today when I just happened to visit the ODFW web page and saw a link to Diamond Lake. Well guess what????
While I was snoozing the fish management powers down there have been busy having meeting after meeting after meeting after meeting after meeting.... and, now.. after about 6 or 7 years of meetings and conferences and God only knows how many letters and emails and reports and discussions and reports and studies and more reports and discussions and emails and studies.....
guess what... They've finally decided to rotenone the lake.... It's going to happen in the fall of '06... ....
Unbelievable.......
I'm definitely going to head down and try it out in '07 or '08......
unreal.. they actuall decided to do the rotenone thing.. I just love rotenone........
kind of like drano.... flush the "junk" right down the drain.... and a year later it's great fishing again.....
