Putting the pressure on the kicker to win games in the last seconds just means that the offense failed to move the ball into the end zone, so they should just STFU.

So what is the kicker's role then, just to kickoff?

Catcherman,

I should have explained more broadly. Often times I hear people say that the kicker lost the game because of a missed field goal in the final seconds. More appropriately it's a shared loss with the rest of the offensive team that couldn't put the ball in the end zone either. Hanging the loss on the kicker is a cheap shot when there's plenty of guilty teammates to share the blame for losing the game.

Thanks Hank. Got anything useful?

Sg,

I totally agree that it rarely comes down to a single play that decides the outcome and kickers get the blame when they lose when often, mistakes earlier in the game that could have affected the outcome are forgotten. Kickers are suppose to make the kicks just like defense is suppose to tackle and offense is suppose to block. Over the course of the game, generally there is plenty of blame to go around because everyone makes mistakes. But people remember missed kicks the most.

Kickers get carried off the field when they make a game winning kick, too...even though they were playing tiddly winks and chatting up little boys in the crowd for the other 241 plays that determined the outcome wink

Fish on...

The Okies won with a FG because they couldn't move the ball into the end zone. They had a kicker that didn't coog it.

Just thought I'd let you know... wink

Actually the Okies moved the ball to inside the 1 on a pass play, gaining a 1st down and then used the next play to center the ball for the kick. So they didn't even attempt to move the ball into the end zone with a 1st & goal.

Just thought I'd let you know.
