To get more bites and more trout in HOT weather:

1. Make a smaller presentation; try a single salmon egg or better yet, a single PowerEgg on a small, quality egg hook (size #12 or less).

2. Use lighter main line; at most 4lb. test and light leader; 2lb. test. To really increase strikes, use a quality, Florocarbon line for both.

3. Use a 6 1/2'-7 '+ ultra-light rod and a quality, ultra-light reel. The longer rod and light reel will allow you to cast a LONG way with at most, a 3/8's oz. weight. SET THE DRAG LIGHT! IT'S O.K. FOR A GOOD FISH TO TAKE LINE!

On my trout fishing trips, I see too many of you using a short rod or (worse) a salmon rod with heavy line, A LOT OF LEAD and enough bait for...Anyway, that method works on the dumb planters, but for the HOT weather, survivors try gearing down the presentation and enjoying the fish!

here's my tip. Use a #5 rapala, hook it to a downrigger about 60' back and troll it 20-25' down.

It helps if the lake is deeper than 25 feet, otherwise the downrigger ball drags on the bottom.

This is what works for me in eastern WA when the air temp is around 100 and the water surface temp is running 80 degrees. 25' down is close to where the thermocline will be and that is where the trout should be hanging.

I use a 3/4-1 oz rudder sinker when trolling summertime. It usually gets it down there.
