Red,
While it is true that the .243 cannot be had in the AR-15 package, it can be built on the AR-10 that is used for the .308. RRA offers a complete upper in .243, with the caveat that the barrel is a 10-twist. This will likely limit you to bullets less than 85 grains or so with the barrel throated accordingly.

Read my initial post in this thread for an upper that would be able to fling drag cheating 105 grain VLD's or A-Max's of that caliber at just shy of 3,000 fps. Looking forward to your progress reports....

I would have said more if at all.

I thought 10 twist was standard fare for .243 ?
Seems like my 6mm Rem was 9 twist.

12 twist was a fail for .244 except for short, light varmint pills.

DD,
A 9 would likely shine for most pills, but the slicker 105's are generally marked as 8-twist on their box for good reason. As indicated above, a 10-twist will likely be throated for the lighter pills. A man's gotta know his limitations.... wink

Within certain constraints, the 105 VLD's can do some wondrous things.....

I believe a Armalite AR- 10 can be had with a 9.25 twist. Mine's a 10. It does the 87 V-Max ok. The 95sst's look like someone threw a handfull of gravel at the target..maybe that was me.. The 95 and 105 VLD's also suck. The only reason I have those longer bullits is my 6br is a 8 twist. It(6br) also likes the 107 sierra's which can be hard to find at times. Just repeating...kinda what your saying D. BUT..There is a bit of black magic going on with some barrels.

I think the way to do it is to roll your own.
I just built from scratch an Aero Precision AR15.
You pick and choose exactly the parts you want to use.

If you're into the 308AR/AR10 frame the absolute sweetest receiver set is made right here in Tumwater....(Mega also does the AR15 frame)
http://megamachineshop.com/armsnews.php
I feel like having a cigarette every time I look at one of those Mega Machine receiver sets and I don't smoke.
Put whatever barrel you want on it.
Careful though, Black Rifle is addictive.

Here's a great (the best) video series that calls out all the tools and details the assembly of an AR15.....
http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/lid=11004/learn/
For the large frame you will use a different method to hold the receiver.
If you can get your hands workin' it's not that difficult.
