Just picked up Bob Hooton's "Skeena Steelhead". In it, Bob describes the situation surrounding Skeena steelhead and how it is being (mis) managed into oblivion. For those not familiar with salmonid management it should be an eye-opener. For those who are in management it should be soul-searching.

Can you briefly explain how it is being mismanaged?

The reasonably unconstrained net fisheries are removing most of the steelhead. The fisheries are managed with no concern for impacts to steelhead.

I have not yet read the book, but will. I know Bob and can tell you he is a very serious and careful man. My bet is he doesn't say anything he can't back up 100%.

And since he retired, he can say those things.........

Just as with the rest of the mainland steelhead runs, it is being sacrificed at the altar of commercial salmon fisheries in the estuaries...and if that's not enough, mining in the Sacred Headwaters can clean up the scraps if the Province has its way.

Heard about the book, but haven't seen it yet. Now I'll look for it and add it on the shelf next to Gottesfeld and Rabnett's Skeena River fish and their habitat.

All commercial salmon fisherman should be brought to the reality that the salmon runs don't depend on their pocket books, they depend on the salmon and therefore they are illiterate, useless, good for nothing, garbage fish. Not just the commercial fisherman these days, i'm talking all commercial fisherman from all time periods. I hate em all, the very understanding of what they do makes me wonder why money money was ever invented, I hate it. I'm sure they would take a fist sandwich if there was a wad of hundreds in there. They might even take two.
