I'm looking for a youth deer rifle. I want something used, but in good condition. Must be youth-sized and relatively light (Savage 99, Remington 7 or 700 youth, etc.)

Hoping to find something like a 7mm-08 or 308. Would consider other calibers.

Even have a few guns I'd be willing to trade

A lightweight .308 is gonna kick to much for a new shooter. I shot a friends Remington Mt. rifle, in .308 which is a fairly light gun, about (6 3/4lbs) and it had more recoil than my Rem 700 ADL in 30-06. When it's time for my son to start hunting,I'm going to look at the .243 or the .260 Rem. The 7mm-08 would be another good choice but will have more recoil then the others because of more bullet weight.

If you already have a .270...think about putting it in a youth stock or have the existing stock cut down a bit. The .270 is one of the very best deer rifles and the recoil will be manageable for your new hunting buddy . After he gets a little older put it back in an adult sized stock,and they will have a deer rifle for life.

However, I just picked up a Remington 600 in 308. It's a nice short rifle, fits the older boy well, and I can load it down. Lots of surplus ammo will mean I can afford for the boys to shoot to their hearts content.

Also, if they draw a cow tag, the 308 will be better medicine.

AHHH...the beauty of handloads,you can taylor your loads to whatever you need at the time.

Have you considered the Remington model 740 in .30-06 (or .308)? A great rifle, and the recoil is light. On the used market, they are a great deal. I'd go with the .30-06, A much better all around cartridge, and like the .308, you can load it however you want.

Although autos are generally heavy, the 740 isn't too bad, especially in the .308.

Dan- The Rem 600 is a great little gun, but be sure you load it down alot. I started out with one of these neat little guns over 35 year ago. My Dad gave me hot factory 180 grain ammo, and I'm lucky I learned to shot at all! That combination of gun and load kicks like the proverbial mule. I'd suggest that you break your boy in with 100 or 130 grain mild loads. This should be comfortable and not spook him or develop a flinch. Then you can zero his gun with 150 or 180(elk!) bullets. If the boy gets a shot at an elk he could use a bazooka because of all the adrenaline, and never feel a thing. Hope you draw tags.

Also FYI , Remington currently has a recall on certain model 600 and 660 rifles. Basically, most of these rifles require you to put the safety in the off (fire) position to open the bolt. I modified mine years ago, now Remington is suggesting you send your rifle in to do the same thing. Not sure how necessary this is, especially if safe gun handling techniques are used.

BBVD...
Factory load = bought at the store
Handload = having the tools and suplies to make your own cartridges.

Alot of people either don't like what the factory makes or they they want to improve the accuracy or velocity of a given cartridge. Most guns aren't really accurate with all loads from every manufacture. Having the ability to handload,greatly increases the chances of a shooter to make a load that performs to their satisfaction.

Anybody can learn to handload, but it takes some dedication and usually lots of range time to try out the various loads to get one you really like.
