There is no "best" cartridge for anything. There are many effective cartridges for different tasks. The .270win is one of many rounds that are effective at killing deer.
BTW, the .270 is not a rifle, it's a caliber.

Like stilly bum said...there is no best caliber for deer. You could ask 100 hunters what they like for deer and get 100 different answers. It has been a long running debate as to which is the best, and we will never have a definite answer.
That being said...IMO the .270 Win is one of the top five calibers for deer in the world. The .270 Win happens to be the one I chose for deer.

Tough to go wrong with a .270 for deer. Shoots plenty flat. Has plenty of knockdown power. Great selection of factory loads. What's not to like. Lots of guys like ultra-magnums these days. They mostly seem like a waste to me. I grew up deer hunting in Utah and my first big gun was a .270. I still have it even though I haven't shot modern rifle in 15 years.... .... You wouldn't be interested in a used Winchester model 70 in .270 would you? It's clean and shoots striaght with a 3X9 scope....

Guns are forever, never sell a gun. Trade for more guns maybe.
Then again I'm a damn pack rat.

BBVD,
I have a model 70 in 270 for sale. It's in better than 90% new condition. With a 3X9 scope, sling and a box or two of ammo (whatever is left). IT's a very straight shooting rifle.
I'll sell it for $400.
If you're interested, E-mail me at sheiladhh@aol.com
Thanks,
Fisherdan

I'd like to suggest that if your going to purchase a rifle think about one that can be used for a varity of game.
Your right about the .270 being a flat shooter, however its energy at far distances is somewhat limited. The 140 gr. is probably the most popular for that caliber, but I wouldn't suggest useing it for something like elk. You could go up to a 170gr. but you really loose the ability to shoot any distance with that weight. I would suggest for all around hunting either a .30-06 or a 7MM Mag., they both have the knock down power at long range, factory ammo is in a wide varity of grain weights, and available just about anywhere.
