I see that Grouse season ends 31 DEC. I live in Lacy and would like to get out and get a few. I have never been grouse hunting before and could use some info close to either Satsop, Wynoochie or Skookumchuck rivers. Anyone out there have any good advice and possible places to go. THANKS

I don't know those areas, but I do know some grouse hunting tips. They will hang out around logging roads to get gravel for their gizzards. I prefer roads that are somewhat grown over but maintained roads are good too. The best shoots I've had have been when the weather clears after a period of rain. They either hold in cover during rain and then come out, or they come out into the open to dry off, I'm not sure which. Also, if it's been dry, they'll hang around water which can be creeks or ditches.
The few times I've limited have been on the first clear day after a rainy pattern.

I agree. First clear after the rain or even a light rain seems to bring them out in the open.

My thought has always been that the rain loosens the gravel and washes away the "dirt" so that the small pebbles are easier to get at.

Never really knew the answer, but it seemed logical.

Having never hunted the areas in question, I cannot be much help in that area.

Simpson Timber had roads open out towards McCleary during deer season, not sure whether they are still open. You might try the Kennedy Creek drainages which where accessible from the Ocean Freeway(Montessano/aberdeen etc.), about mile posts 11-13, or Highway 101(take first left after Holiday Valley, follow past Partridge Drive and turn left into woods if gate is still open) Good luck
