For thirty years now I got by with only three guns - four if you count the pellet gun. Now in the last two months have bought two more - both shotguns. So I wonder how many do you need to be a gun nut? Also, how many before I need a good gun safe. Recommendations on a gun safe?

Dave, if it takes three trips to transfer your guns from one house to another, and you have your gun dealer in your contact's list, you might be a gun nut. I think you have a ways to go. As long as you can bolt the safe to the floor or wall, or hopefully both, you should be good. My last safe was a keyed corner safe from Home Depot, many years ago. Made by HOMAK. That would be a minimum of protection level. You can go up from there in security and price. http://www.homaksecurity.com/GunCabinets.htm

Being a gun nut is hard to quantify. More a state of mind than a number. I am sure the news would consider me one and call my collection a "aresonal". [Bleeeeep!] can't speel it and can't check it while on my phone.

I spent way too much on a safe that weighs WAY too much. After moving it four times, each with incident, I decided a lighter safe bolted to the wall and floor would be just as an effective deterrent. The size is dependent on the number of firearms you would like to cumulatively own someday. A Sargent and Greenleaf dial, multiple locking bolts and protected hinges are minimum requirements for me. Fireproof rating is optional- mine is supposed to be good for 30 minutes at 1200 degrees but not having to fight with the insurance company post fire could be advantageous unless you have something sentimental or irreplaceable.
Long story short, I would buy a bigger safe than what you think you need, don't scrimp on quality and one that is light enough that moving it is still feasible.

A "cruffler"....if I were a cruffler I'd be able to get the good price at some shops. I just might look into it, although it does sound kind of ascottish. http://www.cruffler.com/becomingcruffler.html

Nobody love to hunt more than I do, I'm not a gun nut though. I have a few rifles that work VERY well and I'm happy with that. I've got maybe a dozen.
It's the animals that give me the rush, not the weapon.

Being a gun nut is like being beautiful; its in the eye of the beholder. +1 on a bolting a safe to the firm structure of your house. Just remember you spent X amount of cashola on your firearms so dont cheap out on your safe. Fire rating is one thing when the house is just getting hot; you must also consider the weight of what is above your safe falling on it and busting it open then making your fire rating useless. You want a strong heavy safe thats is 10 gauge or stronger steel. Do a few searches for safe buying tips and you will find some very honest advice but it leads to an expensive safe. One thing I found out from these tips is that the 12 gauge steel safes can be busted into with a fireman's axe.

I used Northwest Safes when my son left the door of the safe open, spun the dial and tried to force the locking mechanism which in turn sheared a cotter pin. Leave it to a kid to find the weak link in a system.. "hey dad, watch this..."
The guy from Northwest Safes was great and from my Internet research was the only company in the area capable and willing to make a house call. My only experience with them is service related but the guy took the time to show me how it worked and was very reasonable for the time and distance required. As usual... What Stam said.
+3 now.

You may have heard on the news about a southern California man put under 72-hour psychiatric observation when it was found he owned 100 guns and allegedly had (by rough estimate) 100,000 rounds of ammunition stored in his home. The house also featured a secret escape tunnel. My favorite quote from the dimwit television reporter: “Wow! He has about a quarter million machine gun bullets.” The headline referred to it as a “massive weapons cache”. By southern California standards someone owning 100,000 rounds would be called “mentally unstable”. Just imagine if he lived elsewhere: In Arizona , he’d be called “an avid gun collector”. In Texas , he’d be called “a novice gun collector”. In Utah , he’d be called “moderately well prepared”, but they’d probably reserve judgment until they made sure that he had a corresponding quantity of stored food. In Montana , he’d be called “The neighborhood ‘Go-To’ guy”. In Idaho , he’d be called “a likely gubernatorial candidate”. In Wyoming , he’d be called “an eligible bachelor”. In Wisconsin , he’d be called “a deer hunting buddy”. And, in Alabama , we just call him “Bubba”. Keith

In Chehalis, they'd just say it must be the old crazy guy up on the hill.
Hi Parker....Andy was here today and his quiet 6.8 AR is really a nice little yard gun. You'll have to ask Andy about my yard.

Nice visiting with you, Marvin. Loved the shop, and the yard. Thanks also for looking at my rifle and suppressor alignment. Much appreciated. Now if I ony knew someone who could load up some sub sonic rounds.
