A bunch of us got together for the dove opener with plans to move into the high country for an archery hunt the next day. The dove opener was slower than most but I managed to scare a few. Later that day TK and I went for a long drive to scout for quail. Well we didn't see too many quail, but did find a herd of mule deer with several nice bucks in it. We drove back to camp and told one of our best archers approximately where we last saw the deer. I took my usual afternoon nap and awoke to find the guys back with a fine buck in the back of the truck.

They found the deer pretty near where TK and I told them we saw them. A short stalk and it was buck down! That's a fine way to kick off the season IMHO. We had dove poppers, and deer backstrap on the BBQ that night.

We are a motley crew for sure, nice shot! Great time Dave....really glad you could join us. Cut and wrapped the Brewster buck this morning and I am now headed back over east to my cabin with Broodbuster to try to get his first archery deer.

Great Pic Dave! Motley crew yes-Cold Blooded Killers, Hell Yes!!

Big Mike was so excited telling me this story Ike was able to sneak a Tenderlion and a Backstrap steak out of his freezer-Yum!

As for our hunt it seems that the bears, badgers and elk have taken over so we only had one blown stalk on a 3X3. Lots of critter sighting's though including two 5X5 elk at 20-25 yards, damn spike only units frown

I did loose one arrow though. Double lunged a wabbit from 20 yards smile

Had yet another 5x5 elk at under 20 yards last weekend, the third excellent chance at a mature bull. Saw the same 3x3 mule deer (only legal deer we've seen in my cabin area since the opener), at 50 yards this time, but he never stopped walking. Mule deer populations are either very spotty in the area, or the warm temps and fires have them hunkered down. Grouse populations appear to be average to good with 4 or 5 sightings per forray, mostly Ruffed and few Blues.

Here is another pic of the Brewster buck from the Sept. 1 opener...shot from a crappy cell phone camera, but different than Vedder's classic back of the truck photo.

September and October are the best months in this state....I don't care who you are!
