This is the deer i shot on Sunday...shot it at 9 in the morn had it out of the hills at 7:30 that evening. The longest day of my life...
3 shots from my 300 win mag put it down. It is a very wide 3 point with eye guards... Not sure if it is a mulie or black tail. It is in a mule deer area that is managed for blacktail. It doesn't have the big ears or the small tail...
I am not really concerned about it because it is my biggest deer so far... It will taste good...

Look at that skinny nose. Interesting looking deer. The blacktail and mule deer are essentially the same deer, and they do interbreed in areas where their ranges overlap.

Congrats!

I couldn't get the pic to work either. Upload it to this sites gallery so we can all see it. Sounds like a nice deer. I have shot some that were a weird cross between Muley and Whitetail, and one weird cross between Muley and Blacktail. Have seen some MONSTER blacktails that looked like they should have been muleys, but the tails and ears were definitely blacktail.

That worked.
It is a nice deer. Really odd looking. Never seen a muley with that much white in the face with the brown strip down the nose. It does not quite look muley or blacktail. Bottom line is it is a nice one!

Jen probably has a diddy in there that won't allow another server to pull up the pic ... saves on bandwidth wink

Nice Deer! To make the call Blacktail/Muley, check the tail...black on the tip only, or on just the half towards the tip, is a Mule Deer. Black on the whole length of the tail is a Blacktail.

There is no scientific way to use the antlers as a way to positively identify Blacktail from Muley.
You can however, use antlers to differentiate between Whitetails and Blacktail/Muley....tines from a main beam, with no forks in the tines above the main beam (with the exception of the eyeguards!)indicate Whitetail. Antlers that fork before forming one main beam indicate Blacktail/Muley.

I thought your deer looked a lot like a Whitetail until I saw the fork in the tine near your right hand.

Regardless of the species, beer
