One evening a grandson was talking to his grandmother about current events. The grandson asked his grandmother what she thought about the shootings at schools, the computer age, and just things in general..
The Grandmother replied, "Well, let me think a minute, I was born before: ' television ' penicillin ' polio shots ' frozen foods ' Xerox ' contact lenses ' Frisbees and ' the pill
There were no: ' credit cards ' laser beams or ' ball-point pens
Man had not invented: ' pantyhose ' air conditioners ' dishwashers ' clothes dryers (and the clothes were hung out to dry in the fresh air and man hadn't yet walked on the moon.)
Your Grandfather and I got married first, .. .... ... and then lived together.. Every family had a father and a mother. Until I was 25, I called every man older than me, "Sir". And after I turned 25, I still called policemen and every man with a title, "Sir." We were before gay-rights, computer- dating, dual careers, daycare centers, and group therapy. Our lives were governed by the Ten Commandments, good judgment, and common sense. We were taught to know the difference between right and wrong and to stand up and take responsibility for our actions. Serving your country was a privilege; living in this country was a bigger privilege... We thought fast food was what people ate during Lent. Having a meaningful relationship meant getting along with your cousins. Draft dodgers were those who closed front doors as the evening breeze started. Time-sharing meant time the family spent together in the evenings and weekends-not purchasing condominiums.
We never heard of FM radios, tape decks, CDs, electric typewriters, yogurt, or guys wearing earrings. We listened to Big Bands, Jack Benny, and the President's speeches on our radios. And I don't ever remember any kid blowing his brains out listening to Tommy Dorsey. If you saw anything with 'Made in Japan ' on it, it was junk. The term 'making out' referred to how you did on your school exam.... Pizza Hut, McDonald's, and instant coffee were unheard of. We had 5 &10-cent stores where you could actually buy things for 5 and 10 cents. Ice-cream cones, phone calls, rides on a streetcar, and a Pepsi were a nickel. And if you didn't want to splurge, you could spend your nickel on enough stamps to mail 1 letter and 2 postcards. You could buy a new Ford Coupe for $600, but who could afford one? Too bad, because gas was 11 cents a gallon. In my day: ' "grass" was mowed, ' "coke" was a cold drink, ' "pot" was something your mother cooked in and ' "rock music" was your grandmother's lullaby. ' "Aids" were helpers in the Principal's office, ' "chip" meant a piece of wood, ' "hardware" was found in a hardware store and ' "software" wasn't even a word. And we were the last generation to actually believe that a lady needed a husband to have a baby. No wonder people call us "old and confused" and say there is a generation gap.
How old do you think I am?
This woman would only need to be 61 years old.

In old man voice . .
"Back in my day we had dial up modems. You would have to wait 5 minutes for a single porn picture to download."
"Nowadays you kids get on your phones, what we could only dream about . . . if we had a good imagination."
"Women would wear jeans that stopped above their waists, and a whale-tail was actually part of a whale"
"Nowadays we got push up bra's, yoga pants, and women wearing 6" heels to Church!"
God bless technology.

So, is Grandma bragging or complaining? I couldn't tell for sure. And I'm older than Grandma's minimum age for all that to be true. curious......which ones don't you remember? the iron lungs for polio victims? Actually, the penicillin one is inaccurate as its use began in the '40s (if 1949 that would be 63yrs)......but it was "invented" (discovered) in 1928 I don't know when this bit of trivia was written, but I guess it could be a few years old.

Redsoxfelcher,
Relinquish control. Sounds like a pussy victim mentality to me if you young fukers are so smart and tough take control. You fing pussies just stand there with your little diks in one hand with the other hand out waiting for mommy to give you something or make the other kids play fair. The success of the boomers made you the spoiled whiney generation.

TJ.....Not sure why some kids turn out that way......not all do, though. I have kids that are responsible, hard working, dependable, and honest.....and I have kids that have been irresponsible, half-assed, always late, and liars........I will say that the latter are growing up and changing their defiant ways and actually becoming likeable.....but it hasn't always been that way.

Slab,
For the sake of your curiosity, I don't remember this being any or much more true then than now:
Our lives were governed by the Ten Commandments, good judgment, and common sense.
Draft dodgers were those who closed front doors as the evening breeze started.
We listened to Big Bands, Jack Benny, and the President's speeches on our radios. --- the early seeds of rock and roll were being sown very well in the 1950's, so while I remember pre-rock, rock was definitely the foundation of my generation.
The term 'making out' referred to how you did on your school exam.... --- not true, except maybe for the socially retarded.
You could buy a new Ford Coupe for $600, but who could afford one? Too bad, because gas was 11 cents a gallon. --- have to be a lot older than 61 for that to be true. More like 81 years old.
And we were the last generation to actually believe that a lady needed a husband to have a baby. --- also flat out false. Gals who got knocked up in high school dropped out for a year or more and went to a home for "unwed mothers." The gal was shamed and the guy who knocked her up was congratulated, not really something to be proud of as a better time.

Some combination of nature vs nurture Slab. In douchepackers case it comes from some notion that all of the ills in his life come from his mommy and dadas generation. It's always your parents fault right. Sounds like they spoiled his candy arse too because we all know that you are automatically a better person if you drink only micro brews, hail from the NE and flick only flies. Entitled surely.

Looking back....to be in uniform required Levis rolled up two inches, penny loafers, a white T-shirt and a leather bomber jacket. Lot of the kids had a pack of butts rolled up in the shirt sleeve. Luck Strikes if I remember correctly. The red ball showed up well. Didn't like 'm at the time tho, I lacked that bit of the UOD. Fonzie and Grease tried to emulate the scene but didn't quite make it. Heros change too, Prince Valiant, Cyrano, Tarzan and Red Ryder were a few of the good guys. Now we got multi-millionaire sports prima- donnas and Hollywood politicians. Life was good and yet people were dying in Korea, Indo-China, Malayia and all over Africa. Old Kingston Trio song, "They're rioting in Africa There's strife in Iran The whole world is festering .... and on and on. the something Minuet it was called
