Thursday night, 9:30pm, watching some TV. I hear a crash come from the side of the house and the windows rattle a little bit.

I had a good guess as to what happened. A few months ago a beaver had been doing this in the greenbelt next to my house.

I grabbed the spotlight and confirmed my suspicions. These are from the next morning.

Master bedroom deck:

View down to greenbelt:

From the ground:

View of roof, just missed my skylight:

Scene of the crime:

Doesn't look like any branches pierced the roof so damage is minimal. Climbing up there tomorrow to get a better look after we get the tree down.

First instinct was to get the .22 and exact my revenge... but my neighbors like him around so we'll let WDFW take care of it.

HOA probably won't pay despite the fact I had them take out the first cottonwood pictured and some other beaver damaged trees. They also wrapped some trees in the greenbelt to keep the beaver away. However this tree was 50ft from the waters edge it didn't seem like he'd come that far up.

got lucky for sure. I'd make the first cut just above the gutter to keep the top from moving around on the roof. Might get just a bit tricky when the trunk comes off the stump, though.

That's eerily similar to when a beaver dropped a tree on our house.

We had 40 acres of cottonwood on our place along the lower Wilson, It became beaver paradise.

They would go 20 to 40 yards in to the tree's to take one down. Seldom did they ever take tree's close to the river.

Trapping became a full time endeavor. Seems we would trap one, and then two more would take that ones place.

This.
Those alders that lean toward your house...can only do one thing. The beavers can not just cut timber, they are also excellent excavators. They are rodents and will persevere even under extreme "management". If you think it's the governments job to control them in your back yard, then your wife is right...move back to the city :-)

Ended up topping it near the overhang, a knot kept it from slipping down.

Put a block in an adjacent tree and hoisted it off the roof. Also chained it to the stump to make sure it didnt move too much.

No serious damage, need to replace the gutter though.

Hearing how far the beavers will go for a tree makes me worry, all the alder/cottonwood lean toward the house for light.

You can install woven wire fencing around the trees that are leaning towards your house to keep the beaver from chewing on them. Make sure you trench the wire into the ground about 6" -10" so they don't dig under it.

Bummer about the tree.

I have an uncle who is a WDFW registered nuisance trapper. If you need his services just PM me. I don't think he charges very much.

I have a funny story about the last HOA group he worked for on some nuisance otters.

I'm not saying that I would tolerate beavers falling trees into or onto my stuff, but I don't kill them if they are just doing what beavers do. I've replanted and replanted and replanted......so? They were here long before I was......and the salmon did just fine. Now WDFW kills them because the chum don't jump over obstacles......how does this make sense? Beavers were plentiful and fish had ponds to grow up in and flourish......so what is with the desire to kill them? Seriously.

One more thing....one of the beavers' biggest natural enemy are coyotes.........maybe some rethinking there is appropriate as well?

I could use some beaver. Would like to see my neighbors trees down. I'm tired of dealing with leaves and am in the process of pruning a few of my own trees. I need to rent a chipper/shredder. Trap the bark rodent and send it my way.
