As I have looked at the thread regarding Bob Costas and his gun comments, I have chosen not to comment because my thoughts are well known - I agree with Costas. However, Dogfish, who appears to be an eminently reasonable and good man has pointed out one of the great problems with the proliferation of guns in our society. It becomes such an easy thing to deem the use of a gun as the solution to a problem, even when the death penalty is not the appropriate penalty. Now, I don't know if Dogfish was being sarcastic but I can guarantee you there are a number on this board that will read his comment and say "Right on!"

Sarcasm, Eddie. There is a justice system, and however flawed it is, it is the law of the land.

One person trying to purposely destroy another's life is horribly tragic.

That person, of course, being the duly appointed executioner after the defendant, who is presumed innocent until proven guilty, is justly tried and convicted in a court of competent jurisdiction and law.

The reason society seems to be going to the dregs is because too few dregs are being removed from society.

Seat belt and helmet laws, car seats requirements, and now carbon monoxide detectors. The government is standing in the way of natural selection.

If you want to really extend the natural selection argument -- you could very soundly argue that modern medicine is making us as a species significantly weaker.

We now can do wonderful things like saving newborn babies with perforated diaphragms or under developed lungs at birth... In the microcosm of that single family it's a huge blessing.

But we're perpetuating those genetic flaws throughout society... Is that good?

(FWIW I am not at all on one side or the other here, just think it's a fascinating unintended consequence of modern medicine saving so many young people from genetically inherited defects/diseases)

Yeppers. Science is undoing natural selection. And people are living long enough to actually collect Social Security, which by old actuarial tables was not the intended consequence. And on and on.
