I am up in Alberta after my Mother in Law died last week. busy cleaning out stuff and taking care of the estate. We have a diamond ring that was appraised at $6500 for replacement. It now belongs to my Sister in Law. We stopped by a place that has a good reputation to see what they would pay. They offered $500.

I know the appraised replacement value is not the market value. Does anyone on here know what kind of place is best to get a fair price for the ring? Does anyone know what the usual percentage difference is between appraised value and market value? The place that offered the $500 is basically a pawn shop.

Any help is appreciated.

Mike

P.S.

May be a strange question on the darkside, but I would guess some of you know about this stuff.

Mike, I used to work for a numismatist and jeweler, & actually have a NGI certification under my belt.

To find out what the stone is worth, you need to know what the size and rating is for the stone, then ask to have it compared against a recently published Rappaport sheet which is a very commonly used market pricing index for diamonds. It is used for sales, and I think it would be fair for you to expect a price in the range of 15-20% less than what the stone is going for on Rappaport.

The finding, or ring setting, is only worth it's melt down weight + quality (14k, 18k, etc...) during resale.

edit: Warning, Pawn shop owners don't like customers who know what they are talking about. I'd suggest going to a jeweler that buys and sells, ask them to Rappaport the stone for you, and you'll come across as knowing WTF you are talking about and get better treatment.

Take the ring to at least 2 different jewelers.

Pawn shop owners are known scumbags and rip off artists that deal mostly with other scumbags, thieves, and drug addicts.

What would lead you to ask a question like that?

Hank---Dans still mad that his Mom pawned her wedding ring from her first marriage. Now that she can legally marry her girlfriend up here that ring woulda' come in handy.

She'll have to pimp her fat as.s out down at the Wild Rose for 6 months to get the 50 bucks to buy a new one.
