I'm heading for East Cape in Baja again in May. Does anyone have a good suggestion for a lure/plug that would imitate a mullet? Sometimes live mullet are a little hard to come by down there.

This should help you. This guy has it dialed in.

Last time I was down there I saw a guy catch a nice rooster on a Ranger lure.
Guys were also tossing some type of poppers, but I never got close enough tp get a good look.
If you have a 10 wt fly rod, I'd pack that as well.

I got this from Jansen's in cabo, but saw the same thing at whorehouse sprouts. It came recommended by a Cabo fishing bum that was doing well with one. Get some steel leader too.

Jansen's has a store in Cabo and I think one near the airport. They open at 9 sharp and are closed on Sundays.

I am told that anything red that makes a lot of action on the surface will work too. Fish the rocks.

Have fun.

This is the same Storm swimbait that was recommeneded to me when I was down in Mazatlan. I was told color doesn't matter but everyone favors one with red on it.

Got to agree with Stam on "fastest is best". You won't beat a rooster to the finish line if it is intent on eating you lure.
Keep crankin fast until you feel your rotator cuff blow out.

I have seen them taken by fly fag's, but again speed is everything. They have to put the rod between their legs and strip with both hands in order to get the fly moving fast enough.

Thanks for reminding me that I will be casting big poppers for roosters in less than 20 days. I agree with Stam that once you are casting to a school f roosters that are crashing bait speed, splash and noise are all that is required.

This is what I am packing for top water poppers

Rappala makes a popper with the color scheme called MULLET
(would post pic but cant figure that out)
its a good weight and size, has great chugging action, and is well balanced

And while I was down there a month ago we seen Jplugs at the local tackle store we asked what they use them for and they said to troll for roosters. So I would think a cop car Jplug may work if trolling is something you might do. You would actually be able to use the trebble hooks that they come with if you please.
