Anyone fish for these things? We went out last Thursday and boat 12. First time I had ever fished for them.... what a kick. Pulled big top water plugs. One must have been 20 pounds.

Any other techniques available? Cut bait? Herring?

Probably Oregon. Umpqua river or some name like that? Sounds fun though!

hey TH,
if i'm not out fishing for salmon or steelhead you'll find me fishing for stripers,i'm not sure if your fishing for them in fresh or salt water,if you let me know i can get into ways of rigging for them,as far as lures the best i've ever used are the pencil popper and hair raiser, but i mostly use bait, good baits;anchovies, sardines, threadfin shad,herring,pro-cured herring, pile worms, grass shrimp, and every once in awhile ghost and mud shrimp, but the best all around trophy striper bait i've ever used is live bullheads,if there's any thing else i can help you with let me know

p.s.FISH On!!!

Yes, Oregon. I fish in fresh water. We pulled 6 inch Rapalas the last two nigts, but I am thinking of trolling cut herring. Last Fall, we would catch them acidentally while trolling herring for Chinook.

Do you fish the bait on the bottom as you would for a fall chinook? Or on top like a top water plug?

I need to know how much weight I should troll with.

TH , I've done a good bit of that fishing, how much water are you fishing in, how much current, what is the primary feed, these things will determine the best techniques. These fish can be tons of fun once you get them pegged.

Water warmed up this week with the beautiful weather and I didn't get a chance to fish. :-(

We have been fishing the end of the tide water section. very slow, current, with lots of structure. This is an old logging community so there are pilings on every corner of the river. The stipers seem to be hanging around the structure, and feedintg on the outgoing tide. Sort of ambushing the smaller fish as the make their way out to the bay.

We have been pulling cut herring and having lots of success.

Bank fisherman have been throwing night crawlers and sandshrimp. Even they have been catching lost of fish.

It's another great fishery for little kids, and big kids too. We have been dropping the boat in after T-Ball practice and fishing until 9:00 or so. 19 hooked 12 landed last Thursday, not a bad evening.
