This is the earliest I have ever needed to mow the lawn. But I do recall my dad talking about a Feb. in the 40s when he was able to plant some garden stuf cuz it was so warm.

I yanked out the mower two weeks ago just to see if it would start. Once I got it fired up I figured what the hell and mowed since it was pretty dry that day. It looks like another week or so and I'll have to do it again. Already have one Rhody in full bloom and a magnolia getting ready to pop.

SG,
If you want practice, swing by the farm. We have a new "Husky", 24HP with hydrostatic transmission. It's pretty fast.
If you need help, I have two young boys in need of character building.

It's interesting that now the Department of Defense has taken a position of acknowledging climate change and global warming.
Last week the PACOM commander (Admiral Locklear) stopped by, and when talking about the mission I Corps now has in the Pacific he said the Corps must be prepared for "a warming planet causing the rise of sea levels and destabilizing Pacific countries."

Mowed last Monday and yesterday.
I like a nice, clean, manicured lawn...now post wind event clean-up begins.

I just finished a book "The Worst Hard Time" by Timothy Egan (lives in Seattle) about the Dust Bowl. If you want to read about how we raped the Great Plains and caused the worst ecological disaster in American history, that book is great. Anyway, in that book it was said the hottest period on record in this country was in the mid-'30s. Here's that book if you're interested. http://www.amazon.com/Worst-Hard-Time-Su...by+timothy+egan Read that about a year ago. Those were some hardy folks that outlasted the dust.

Slab,
I don't have a lawn . . . yet. Just finished a 3 week landscaping job that I've wanted since we moved into the new house 2 years ago. Lot of work on the hillslope, kinda' expensive, and had to wait. Now I have a couple spots for small lawn areas and tons of planting beds just waiting for flowers, shrubs, and stuff. That rain last Friday kinda' made a mud mess in places, so I didn't get any planting done this weekend. Put in a bunch of bare root stock plants the previous weekend.
May have to fire up the lawnmower in . . . a few months.
Sg Well, damn, Sg. I thought you were going to gravel the whole place or plant junipers and cover everything else in bark or some such maintenance-free abomination. My apologies. Sounds like it is going to be beautiful. So now what the Hell am I going to pick on you about?

Funny I mowed for the first time in months Sunday just to help clean it up from storm debris. While doing so, I came to the conclusion That the state plant shouldnt be a Rhody, it should be Moss... Oh and By the Way, Can all you old cranky farts get the F*&! off my lawn!

I've learned to appreciate (live with) moss....as long as it stays off the roof.
