My colleague and I are both keen fly fishermen from New Zealand and we will be in WA in late November. We will have one clear day to sneak in a bit of fishing in between being in Portland one night and Tacoma the next. (We could actually leave Portland late in the evening to arrive at a fishing spot en route. We are travelling by car.) Could we call on your local experience to advise us where we might get the most "bang for our buck" in the limited time we have available. Thanks.

You might want to consider the Kalama River.
If it looks good.

Mike,

I would say that there would be a couple of choices. The Kalama for early winter steelhead and maybe some late salmon. The East Fork of the Lewis for Steelhead. The both have pretty good access and both are within 45 minutes from Portland. Or head up to Tacoma and hit the Green for early winter steelhead or Salmon. This river is about 45 minutes northeast of Tacoma and has pretty good access. If you want more information or want to be directed to local shops drop me a line steelheadjunky@hotmail.com

JJ

PS: Go All Blacks. I saw them beat Italy in Huddersfield a week and a half ago while over there on Rugby tour.

Maybe the Cowlitz would be a god choice. There are allot of Salmon this year and it's about 1/2 way from Portland to Tacoma. Maybe think about getting a guide for the day. It would be worth the money.

good luck,
