I was watching a fox news program this morning (Fox and Friends), and in a talk with a Chicago radio host they stated that our government intentionally killed 700,000 salmon, This was supposedly done in order to keep them on the endangered species list so the government could keep control of the river and surrounding land. They didn't offer much for details as far as where this took place or what species of salmon they killed. Just wondering if anyone had heard anything about this, and if so if any more details were available. I am also sending an e-mail to fox news to see if they can add to this story.

At the Fall Creek Hatchery on the Alsea River in Oregon they killed about 4000 Cohos last fall. There reasoning why, They are hatchery fish and they are competing with the wild spawners. Well here is the funny part.... Fall creek has waterfall about 1 mile from the mouth. There were no salmon or stealhead above that point until there was a fish ladder installed. The hatchery was built above the falls.
Some people video taped the killing and have filed a lawsuit to stop the killing. Coho were considered for listing on the endangered species list here in Oregon. It maes absolutly no sense to kill a fish that that is supposed to be "endangered". The coho stock that the hatchry raised were orginally Alsea river stock.
Thats just an example of how screwed up our goverment is. The N.M.F.S. were the ones who told the state of Oregon to kill those fish. They were the ones who made the decision to list the coho.........
Smells fishy to me...........................

willierower. Very much interested in more input regarding specifics and possibly email addresses of persons that I could contact concerning the "killing" fields on the Alsea River. Any guidance and input from their learning curve will certainly help a local volunteer group that is/will be faced with similar motherhood from WDFW. Still hoping to stock Chehalis River with something 2fish4.

It has been common knowledge for a long time that the Kendall Hatchery on the Nooksack River has been killing,so called HATCHERY fish, to HELP the wild stock. Who knows for sure what is going on. Our goverment keeps on telling us we need to trust them to take care of us, RIGHT ON !!!!!!!!!!!!!

There have been two newspaper articles lately concerning the killing on the Alsea. The reasons they state don't hold much water to me. That the hatchery fish eat too much feed, so there won't be enough left for the wild fish. How did the wild ones eat when there were a lot more of them? That the hatchery fish are genetically inferior. If the brood stock for the hatchery were wild stock from the same river, how is there a genetic problem?
I must not understand, because I thought the idea was to have plenty of fish for all.
