Some of that high bank became higher bank, and some of that high bank became lower bank. Sorry for the folks who were affected.

This might not be a popular viewpoint but I don't have much sympathy for high-bluff homeowners affected by slides or river-bottom homeowners affected by floods for that matter.
How was that high-bluff formed in the first place? By regularly sloughing off into the sea. How did that river-bottom get nice and flat? By regular flooding making it so. Why do they think these natural processes will suddenly stop once they build there? Duh!
OK, that said the before picture is not a real extreem case of high-bluff building and had a lot of tree re-population since the last slide that you would think would have stabilized that bank. So a little sympathy in this case. But, still, maybe you should look at the bigger picture of the topography before picking a building site.

i dunno, but that before shot has a lot more conifers in it that the after shot leads you to think. deciduous trees are crappy for hillside stabilization so maybe that has something to do with it, wonder when that b4 pic was taken and why the loss of firs and influx of leafy trees?
i know what you mean though, just like in olympia at Carlyon beach, ridiculous development proposals and and a even more ridiculous works department for approving the permits..that hill doesnt look too bad though in the pic..i would be real nervous if i were landowners along that hillside for a mile either way!

Look closer......not many evergreens in either pic. There is a difference is the "green" color...even in the top pic.

Trees have very little if any influence on large deep-seated rotational landslides. Those are going to happen regardless. Shallow landslides are the ones trees make a difference on.

That's consistent with what I heard. A geologist said the toe of that slide is below sea level and that the form extends along about two miles of the shoreline. If there are houses there, they are also at risk. Sg

same type of slide exists on 112 on the way to Sekiu just before you drop down to Deep Creek. The Hwy Dept. has been dealing with it for longer than I've lived over here....Even rerouted the Hwy up and around.....like WAY up and around.......didn't solve a thing....slid out again ......and again.......and
