I'm planning a trip to either Cook Creek, the Salmon river, or possibly the Quinault itself near the end of December (with a tribal guide). Can someone tell me what the tributary fishery is like, and which tributary (Cook or the Salmon) would be the best bet that time of year. I understand Cook Creek has more fish, but does the small size of the creek and amount of fishing pressure take away from the experience? I would like the chance to have a little water to myself, any recommendations?

I have fished the lower river and the mouth of Cook creek with a guide. More fish can be found in the main river near the mouth of Cook creek but if you want lower pressure then fish below the gravel bar where you launch from on the main river. You can fish the Salmon in the olympic park with out a guide but you will be limited to about a half mile of river, best just during and on the drop of high water. Fishing pressure depends on the day. Weekends are the worst. You can also fish on the Queets at the mouth of the Salmon, that part fishes well just after high water on the main river. Best of luck.

Cook Creek and Salmon River are hot!!! I go to both all the time... both rivers are fine for getting away from the crowds, I mean at no time is it ever as bad as blue creek on the cowlitz...the guides allow you to go off on your own if you like so you are free to roam the streams... last opener on the cook my brother and I banked 40 steelies!! if you go, get ahold of Letty! she is great, tell her Danny sent you..... good luck bud!
