So a couple of buddies and I are planning a 3 day hike in bow hunt trip. this will be our first time doing it. aside from the obvious sleeping bag and the like, what would you fellas suggest to bring or not to bring? want to be light as possible without leaving out something we would regret on the trip.

food ideas?

The idea is to hike in several miles and set up a base camp we can hunt from.

Thanks in advance!

I’ll be tweaking my list for a 7 day solo trip here over the next month or so but some of the staples…

Food-Coffee, Erin Baker Breakfast cookies, power bars, peanut butter crackers, Gu energy packets, Mountain House backpacking meals (they were 20% off at REI over the weekend), whiskey.

Clothes: Marino Wool: undies (extra pair of socks), light weight, heavy weight. Pants, rain gear, bandana, wool cap, hat, gloves. Boots.

Stove, extra fuel

Water: purifying tablets (I use the chlorine based ones as they taste just like drinking water but take a wee bit longer). 3 liter water bladder. Electrolyte tablets similar to Gatorade

Shelter: Tarp, bivy sack, sleeping bag, sleeping pad

Trekking poles

Hunting: Camera, knife, game bags, binoculars, broadhead tool w/sharpener, bow, arrows (four w/broadheads 2 w/judos)

Safety: Ten essentials + Spot communicator, GPS w/paper maps, headlamp.

If I were to prioritize the above for a 3 day trip it’d be………

Boots, boots, boots. Bow. Optics. Pack. Shelter.

very True.......

Thanks for the tips fellas!

As far as the dehydrated dinners, are there some that are better than the others? brands or preffered choices?

Or....

I just get a half gallon of Black Velvet and pass out 1/4 from the truck.....so many options

What time of year are you planning this? September?

GOOD BOOTS!

tarp shelter
jet stove
cup/pot/frenchpress
spork
MRE's
coffee
sleeping bag
clothing system
bow w/full quiver... Don't really understand the need to only bring a couple arrows.... [Bleeeeep!] happens. also, arrows are one of the lightest things on your pack.
old ski poles (that also work as tent poles)
first aid kit
optics

as for the whisky... I'd rather kill an animal, then sit up there and kill a bottle...

All of the MH meals are pretty darn good. As for favorites that is what pre season scouting is for wink

You do want to pay attention on the serving size though as they range from 1 person to 2.5 or 1000 to 2500 calories.

A game bag or two might be helpful if you plan on being successful.

That's where I get mine. If I'm just getting Mountain House freeze dried food then any outdoor retailer will do. I'm annoyed I missed on the deal at REI. Another decent food choice is oatmeal. I actually found that I like eating it dry but that might just be me grin

MREs are a lot heavier than Mountain House freeze dried. Expensive too. I generally prefer MH to Backpackers Pantry.

Any advise on water purifiers? someone suggested chlorine tablets...

I will be hunting the coast range so many little streams and springs are avaliable in the area.

I use a MSR MiniWorks Water Filter. It's money if you have little streams available. I'll take a couple extra tablets for an emergency situation.
