I have loved this car more than any other to date, and sometimes in my bachelor years parts even came before beer/food! After owning it, loving it, beating on it on the track, and having a great time with it i have decided to tear it down for a full restoration and give the car the love it deserves. A new turbo and loads of goodies have been in boxes for a while now and with more free time coming up, my wait is over and i can tear in the heart soul of my little car and create and fire breathing 400hp monster.

i have new rods, pistons, valves, springs, bearings, a couple other bits here and there for oil cooling, and a brand new custom garret turbo, accommodating that will be my set of KW Variant 3 coil overs i have with all new bushings and hardware all around. new clutch and some other goodies for the shifter, pads and rotors (pretty trick pads can't wait to try them out!)

as the car sits, im right around 300hp in low boost settings with old turbo and internal bits.

this is when the car was just getting tuned, and just getting going for first time with turbo. not a bad start/pull cool

Specs:

2.0L 16 V (swap) (rebuilt)
9.3:1 compression ratio
Dished 9A pistons (forged)
Custom Audi based short runner intake
40 lb/hr injectors with SX Adjustable FPR
DTA P8 Pro Engine Managment
Bell Vertical flow intercooler (28 flow tubes)
GT-30 Dual Ball Bearing Turbo
02J gear box from a TDI
Peloquin torque biasing diff.
Custom full 2.5" stainless exhaust system
AMS Cast Iron tubular exhaust manifold
TT 16V Cam Set
TT Port and Polished Head
Full Front and Rear Corrado G-60 Disk Brakes
Spec stage 2 clutch (waiting on my stage three to arrive)
G60 Drive Axle

racing with roger cool

more work

rewiring the car

stand alone engine management going in, cleaning up things

after a long weekend, lots of work cool

a night on the town

at the track again

out the hole cool

new shoes

one last cruise

Time to go faster....

Power to weight wins everytime, Hank. I'm down to just under 2,000lbs with driver and full tank of gas on certified scale. Bring it! banana thumbs

Love me some rotary!
That is actually what I had before this car, still wish I had hung onto it to blast around back and forth from work. Good luck to you and your son, and post some pics!

Yak, why so high on the compression? how much boost is the Garrett gonna flow? what was the stock boost and stock compression?

Takes me back. Back in high school, that was one of the "cool cars". Naturally, high schoolers have a way of abusing the crap of cars and I saw several Sciroccos turned into "[Bleeeeep!] Rockets". I never quite realized what a beast they are and what a great platform they are for upgrades until I did a little Autocross stuff in an old Honda. Those Sciroccos were shockingly fast. I can't imagine what yours would do on a real track.

I've never really been a VW guy but I've toyed with the idea of a project car and I've always had a soft spot for the old 1983 and 1984 era GTI's.

This car came NA from the factory.
Low compression is a band aid for a poor tune, not the case for me.
Car will push a little under 20psi when I get her breathing fire again, and over 20psi when I get her dialed in.

You ever get motivated enough to pick one up, please keep in contact with me, I swear I worked on my brothers so much I have those cars memorized. Those little cars are so much fun.

you probably dont need my help, or even want it for that matter, but its worth saying...

you should probably consider going mid/low 8s on compression with over 20 PSI... relative atmospheric pressure is at 14.7 PSI at sea level, so an NA motor pulls 14.7 PSI into the cylinders itself... if you run a turbo at 14.7 PSI, you are doubling the intake, your 2.0 will flow 4.0 liters of air, and even with stand alone EMS's you will have troubles with pre detonation and knock retardation with that high of a compression ratio... 8.0-8.8 is the best area for forced induction motors, most guys running big T-77s and T-88s are pushing way past 20 PSI, and their compression levels are low, in the 8s...

pre det and knock retardation is a fvckin pain in the ass dude, do it right, dont screw with it when its put together...

with that said, if you have personally witnessed the exact style motor you are building, and i mean witness not youtubed, and its got 100k on it, then by all means, run the 9.3.... if you are seeing guys running 8.0 or 8.5 ect, you might want to re think things a bit... too much boost in too high compression will split that block like a fir round....

Raising compression increases the thermal efficiency of combustion and increases the expansion ratio with the proper tune and fuel. More static compression is a good thing, it gives the engine a more crisp, "torquey" response. I know what your saying, but this isn't a pump gas and chip tune POS. project. I have been building turbo engines for a few years now. Thank you though.

Good question, Hank.
ATM I am utilizing a custom 02J transmission from a 2002 turbo diesel Golf. VW's are like Legos for big kids!:)

I have put in a Peloquin LSD and beefed up the gearing a tad.
It has some long gearing in it to keep me in boost longer and be more "traffic" friendly. I don't want to have to trailer the car, so It has to be some what streetable.

Don't want to go much more stout as I am purposely keeping that my "weak point". The transmissions are much cheaper than the axles I will be running.

at 400 HP you will be more than streetable...

my friend just sold his 04 STI that was running 671 HP at the crank with 27 PSI and it was his daily driver... he sold it to buy a 2013 Tesla S P85 because he was pissed about gas prices rofl

good on upgrading the axles... alot of people dont and are left on the side of the road... every chance i get to show people Matt Monett's videos when they are building turbo cars i do... to learn em up... you seem to know enough but incase you dont know who Monett is, he owns the worlds fastest Dodge Stealth RT TT, hes in the mid 8s now, you can hear the axles flopping around after they break... he ran his 8 second run on stock axles tho, some will hold up, some wont... best to not take the chance, which he doesnt now... hes around 1100 HP with 35 PSI

if theres 3000 GT or Stealth fans, Dynamic Racing will help you out alot....

Because of the turbo's hot and cold side, (inducer vs. exducer) and my gear ratio, yes. But not because I don't have 401 hp.

At the moment, before I go ape [Bleeeeep!] and change almost my entire setup, im puhing from 15-18psi when i go out and play on the streets. After the build is near complete, I will be running 18-25 psi on the track.

Well, you did only mention your concern about my comp. ratio, and skipped right over the 40lb injectors that can't come anywhere close to my power goal. That was my clue...

Bottom end, lol, will be hand built by myself, with lots of step by step pics with greasy hands and cheap empty beer cans in the back ground.

I really can't wait to drive this car again...
