Anybody know what kind of fishing options there are from the beach/bank/pontoon near Johnson Point around Labor Day?

Thinking of renting a house down there for the weekend. Can't get too serious about it, since I'll have the family with me, but if there's a decent chance of hooking something from the beach or a little pontoon launched from the beach, that would be nice.

Thanks!

Labor day is about peak time for the Nisqually reach, Green can, Fish trap also. Johnson Pt is between Nisqually and Fish trap, so it would be worth a try at daybreak, evenings, and tide changes.

You should be able to drop a herring down and catch as many dogfish as your arms can handle wink

Not sure exact timing but kings will be rounding that point heading for Oly.

Nisqually would be quite the paddle from Johnson Pt.

A few years ago that area was awesome... coho would mill around in between the old powder warf at dupont and the sandbar at the south end...

They've developed that area into a gravel mine and access is a bit more difficult...

Shakers can be caught tossing lures onto the beach at J.P.

Sea run cut throat are fun to catch. Silvers too. For SRC's, troll on the line where you can just see the bottom with a small spoon, like a Dick Nite or a Canadian Wonder.

In the same depth profile, or maybe a few feet deeper, troll a plug cut or whole herring for silvers. Try no weight, or a 1 oz weight, a BB swivel, and your leader.

The tide really rips along there at times, so be careful.

Not to mention there should be half a zillion pink salmon moving into the Nisqually at about that time. Lots of non-biting chinook in the area, usually between 20,000 and 30,000. And Squaxin coho, tho that would be a bit of a paddle from JP.

Thanks for all the input!

So, for the pinks heading for the Nisqually, do they actually overshoot the river and mill about near Johnson Point? I assume anybody heading for the Deschutes would pass around Johnson Point, but wasn't sure about Nisqually-bound fish.

You could also drive to boston harbor and launch there. The Squaxin coho mill around that area and may be within paddling distance of the launch. Also, the fish trap fish aren't far boston harbor.

So, in order to avoid annoying my wife by bringing the pontoon, I'll probably just fish the beach from the point. The house we are looking at is *just* southeast of the point.

I've never fished for SRC before, but I've always wanted to give it a shot. I know there are lots of flies that are designed for SRC, but as far as gear goes, you guys think small spoons like Dick Nites or Little Cleos?

Would tiny buzz bombs be too much?

I think you'll do just fine fishing off the beach.

There should be coho in the outgoing rip that forms off the daymarker.
You may encounter a late king to the area too.

Herring under a float casted in to the rip and worked in to the lee water should be dynamite.

Trolling your pontoon back and forth from the old herring pens to the daymarker should be money too!

I encountered pinks all the way to Herron Island. So don't be too surprised if you hook one.
