Fished the Sandy Saturday below the pipeline. I caught 2 native fish, and saw one hatchery fish on the bank. Is it early for the native fish to be in? Also has the hatchery run peaked? I'm new to portland and just learning the area rivers, that water on the Sandy is just beautiful, any info on access and peak conditions on both the Sandy and Clack would be greatly appreciated, as I am new to the area.

RAM,

From what I've heard the Sandys hatchery run hasn't shown this year. I've spent a little time on the river this season and haven't seen much of a run. The river has been cold so the fish are not very active and the "wild" fish maybe more active than the "brats". Hope this helps

I fished the Sandy last Thursday for the first time at Oxbow. Didn't see any fish.

Youre new to the area and knock down two fish right off the bat? i should be asking you where to fish.

I'd keep going back to the pipeline. that is arguably the best hole on the river. a steady producer. i was there 1/5 in the PM and saw one taken near the tail. in fact you and the guy who caught the one have something in common. he hadn't been to the river in eight months and got his on the third cast. didn't hear or see any others.

tried the oxbow park area 1/7. saw one native landed at the boat ramp. very little pressure. lack of fish would account for that. either the hatch' run is way late or it's over before it began.

a good source of info for area rivers are the Salmon Trout Steelhead mag's river maps. they have them both for the sandy and clackamas. they are dated (1985+-) but they would be a good start.

see ya' on the river. (i'll be the guy behind the bush watching how you catch your sandy fish)

It wasn't really that big of a deal. Below the Pipeline there's that trail that goes downstream. I found a drift that had steelhead written all over it. It looked like a picture from a steelhead book. And just using a corkie and yarn ripped both of them from the same slot about two hours apart. There, now you don't have to follow me. Last saturday I was going to go there again, but when I got there there at least 20 cars in the parking lot. Just to many for that little water. Fished Eagle Creek and the Clack but didn't touch a thing. Only heard of one hooked all day. Man this year is screwy. The Coho Season was Phenominal, and the metal heads don't want to show. Hope someone is catching them. Rip Those Lips!
