Part 1 - I had some fun with the light flyrods while we were in Kona recently...good times tangling with various species on shrimp, crab and marine worm patterns of various types and sizes. Here’s an amalgam of shots from several of our favorite spots on the Kohala coast of the Big Island of Hawai'i.…

Strip strip strip…

Lots of action over a couple days, including rudderfish (Nenue), hawkfish (Po’opa’a), various wrasse and the state fish. They don’t know they’re the state fish. They’re too busy defending their bommies and getting enough to eat.

Nenue are VERY strong fighters!

This conversation was not what you might think. This chick and her two girlfriends were harfing on the pakalolo for several hours before this. They’d watch me land a fish and she’d toss out hilarious one-liners. With my wife laughing and snapping photos, she ambles over and asks me if I tie my own flies. She then goes on to tell me about her bamboo rod she refinished herself, the various rivers she fished growing up in Pennsylvania, how she prefers to use dries over wets and nymphs for the aesthetic satisfaction and how I’m the first flyfisherman she’d ever seen on that stretch of coast. I just about had her convinced I was a hallucination…..

And a fat hawkfish

I also caught several yellowtail wrasse this trip. The colors on these things are amazing, but they are wild critters and they fight like little bulldogs, trying to rock you in a cave if you don't keep up constant bassmaster-like pressure.

A good ghillie / beer wench is an essential part of a fishing day……

Back to chill out at Lulu’s for a couple cold ones that evening.

Waiting for a strike with a cold one…the day was slow. We only hooked up once and our buddy farmed it off by not winching fast enough when the wahoo ran at the boat. Oh well….fun times with good people and cold beer almost make up for a skunking…almost.

Having a couple Lilikoi margaritas at Bamboo in Hawi to get the right mood going…..

Then hitting the cool little Wild West Hawai’i town for some shopping……

The freakin' nenue gave me a nice puncture wound on my finger with his spikes, then spiked my foot as I was releasing him! Oh well...that's fishing. I'll take a spike wound any day to tangle with another of those guys. GREAT battle on the light gear!

All good things must come to an end, but life is good…..back to Seattletude, work and some local fishing. Searuns and silvers near Port Ludlow…….

Mrs. Mingo gets in on the action …..

Looking for silvers in the S.S. Dingleberry…..a job I take very seriously….

Part 2 -

Mark hooked up!

Mark’s silver was dinner that night along with some crab…..

yeah buddy, you just keep slaving away cracking those EFFING crabs for dinner, I’ll sort out my fly box for tomorrow nyuk nyuk…

Then onto my semi-annual swan song upriver flyrod fun with pinks. I don’t care what anybody says, pinks are fun on a 10’ 4 wt stick...but why in the F would anyone try to snag a fish that will hit so readily? I dig the Quasimodo humps. So ugly they're kinda cute...

Good times.

the best part of Lilikoi is when it is ripe and ready to eat or make into jam, syrup, juice, jelly whatever is it just falls on the ground and you pick it up , perfect for the lazy Islander that hates to reach up,and it grows like a weed, I planted 6 different kine's around a sick guave tree and it just is amazing and yes you can never get enough, great photo's Mingo!!!PEACE

Thanks for taking us along on some fantastic voyages there Mr. Mingo.

Pretty spectacular colors on then salty critters. Looks like a hell of a good time.

Though it's not as colorful as some of the others, this one might be my favorite.

Sweet photo dude. Much like the ocean floor, the closer you look the more you see! Lots of subtle beauty.
