Those 3 fish were caught on the Umatilla River right in downtown Pendleton. There is over 1550 steelies in the river so far this year. Last year me and my two partners caught 22 Steelies in the Umatilla in one day. It is a hard river to fish, UNLESS, you know it, and even then it is snaggy. That is why i like jig fishing. You hardly never lose gear. Black&White (Skunks) jigs work really well this time of year. Later in march Hot pink and shell pink work well, even better then pink and white. I do not know of any other jig manufactures that tie that color combination at this time. But they look just like a shrimp and can really make Steelies go crazy at times. I fish my jigs under a 1 1/4 inch round cork bobber that i paint flat black and mist with silver. It seems to make it harder for fish to see. I do not use a bobber stop, i use the little orange stopper and just push it into the bobber at the right depth. I use a lamaglas wallyer tournement rod with a energy spin reel for the little rivers. Top that with some 14 or 14 pound Fireline line, a small barrel swivel and 30 inches of 8 lb clear maxima line, and bingo, bango, bongo, fish seem to hook them self. I do like using a little smelly jelly on the head of the jig, and i always make sure it is razor sharp and the jig is riding vertical and not horizontal. It is very easy. Heck, i even fish the main Columbia river anywhere along the bank with this combo and catch fish. It is amazing. I look for water that is no deeper then 6 or 7 feet. Gravel bars with a current going over them work great. I have caught every species except a sturgeon on my jigs. That is my goal
. hehe. well i have to go, just got home from work. Law enforcement careers are hell on a decent fishing schedule. Night all. Steve
