After releasing three beautiful natives on the Carbon last weekend I returned on the 12th to try for a repeat. Only managed one hatchery hen around eight pounds, but heard some disturbing news from a fellow angler. It seems he has seen or heard of several native fish being killed and packed out. The one angler he confronted stated that according to the fishing pamphlet he could kill natives on the Puyallup system. It has been highley publicized on the news and on the WDFW website that this system closed to keeping wild fish way back on December 1st. Regardless of weather the state allows keeping wild fish we need to get the message out to ALL fishermen that ALL wild steelhead need to be released. There is very little enforcement by the state so I suggest WE increase our efforts to enforce this. I am sure everyone on this forum agrees with this and will do their part to continue to educate the misguided or ignorant anglers they encounter. I know this has been said many times before but I felt it was my turn to post it. I feel better now......thanks!

B Mac, I heard of them doing that on the Green River last weekend also., apparantly the indians have a claus that allows them to kill natives and also fish from a boat. Going up there this morning about 9:00. I`ll let you know what I see.

I too have met other anglers on the way out of the Carbon packing native fish!!! This does seem to stem from total ignorance rather than the exercising of some perceived native right, (BU****IT)!! JUST SAYING THAT LEAVES A BAD TASTE IN MY MOUTH.These people seem to be the same ones that show no compunction against knocking a salmon that was obviously foul hooked, (remember September?).The individual that I met became very agitated when I pointed out the fact that he was illegal. Try not to let the actions of a few ignorant slobs ruin your day. There are still a few natives in the carbon system. I managed to C&R a nice hen today just below the mouth of Voights Creek. What's your favorite rig for the Carbon? I like to throw the dreaded pink worm with just a small split shot.

When you say you're using the pink worm WITH split shot...are you using the FLOATING pink worm? I got some 4", but they weren't the floating variety! I'd like to try the splitshot method, but am confused if you use the floating worm with that setup! Also...Do you use a float bobber with this setup???
Thanks for the help! L

YUKK ! I heard that it got a hold of me on thursday and didn't let go yet, hoping to head west on thursday try the zipperlip, back to the worm thing, with the leadhead jig floating or not floating doesn't mater,if you want to drift it without a float then use the floating worm or put a small corkie above it if it's a non-floating worm.

Sorry I didn't get back to you earlier. Guess I'm w**king too much lately. To answer your question, I rig the pink worm just like in Bob's tips then crimp a small split shot on the leader just above it. The Berkley Power Worms in Bubble Gum Pink seem to be the favorite. As a final touch, soak your worms in shrimp oil or put a dab of shrimp flavored smelly jelly in the bag with them. UMMM GOOOOD!!! The fish just slam these and won't let go. Also, I've been riging this setup with #1 or #2 GAMMIE OCTOPUS. Works for me! Hope that helps. See ya on the river sometime. Almost forgot, this rig works equaly well with or without a float. Lately I've been making my own floats out of 1" backer rod. Just cut a piece about 4" long ang shove a plastic coffee stir stick up the middle. A dab of silicone retains the stir stick. Use a rubber band for a bobber stopper or buy comercial stoppers, whatever. The grey backer rod kind of blends in with overcast skys. Later.............

GREAT!!! I'll try that! I like the idea of scent IN the bag with 'em! I've been using size 1 or 2 Gammies as well!!! Got some red ones too! As far as making the floats, I'd like to try...where could I get the stuff you were talking about??? The foam??? I bought a couple floats up in Monroe that are foam...made by a local...little tubing running slantwise through them. I like that settup too! Let me know where you get your foam for your floats! Probably at EAGLE where we learn to get ingenius!!! ------------------ "Great spirits have always encountered opposition from mediocre minds!" Albert Einstein

Lately the hot rig for me has been a Leo's style jig, red beads and chartreuse yarn tail fished around 18" below a float. Fish have been holding in the soft edges close to shore near the head of the riffles. Got a nice native buck around ten pounds near Voight's Creek on Sunday afternoon. Lost a very large fish later in the same area. Never saw the fish but it was much stronger than the fifteen pounder I got last weekend.before. One more tip, try tipping your jig with a small piece of prawn meat. I like to dye mine pink with Beau Mac pro glo bait coloring. C & R!!!
