The GL3 1143c is my primary drift rod for winter steelhead and early summer steelhead (snowmelt months). It handles 8 lb test ok, but I wouldn't want to go to a 6 lb leader for those low, clear, and bright conditions.
I recently built a Loomis IM6 1082c for a friend and he loves it (I think he found the blank for $40!). The GL3 1082c is a 9' light action (6-10lb test) that would handle 6 and 8 lb tests a lot better.
If you would consider Lamiglass, they make a 10' 6-10lb light action, that I think is the ultimate in light steelhead rods. Its the Lamiglass Herzog Signature series made from their Certified Pro series of graphite. This is my favorite summer stick.
Have fun shoppin

Hey obsessed, I have just recently had a custom loomis made and was wondering if I could purchase a different upper section to my loomis? I had made a str1082 9'-0" light action and love the feel but I can't seem to hook up very good. I took it to the Hoh and hooked 4 landed 1. The 1 I landed was caught on a different rod plugging. I had missed 3 hookups drift fishing with my new rod. I would have them on for about 10 seconds running like crazy and then they would spit the hook. I guess I have to get used to setting the hook harder because of the flex of the rod, or am I just crazy? Any info would help. See ya, tight lines!

I also agree that the 1141 is an excellent rod for summer runs.

What a wonderful ROD!! I bought mine in 86 down at the Cowliz. Well I should say my girlfriend bought it for me. It has served me very well!!! Lost count how many fish it has landed . Out of all my rods(which are many)the 1141 is at the top!!! ------------------ Tight Lines!!

Brian:
I don't have a whistling hook set so I've had the same problem in the past with lighter rods. I solved the problem by stepping down from a 1/0 hook to size 2s. You'll have to decide if this is wise on the Hoh with its bigggg fish and logjams. For the Skykomish, which has lots of room, its not a problem and has improved my hook to land ratio substantially.
The comments about the 1141 being real popular on the Cowlitz are true, but as a sled rod. The sleds can follow the bigs one downstream as far as they want. They also like to light line with eggs using size 2s and 4s.
Don't know about putting a stiffer top section on the 1082. Its got a thinner butt section so the tops of the heavier models may not fit.
For you 1141 lovers: If you're looking for a casting model go to Teds Sports Center in Lynnwood (425-743-9505), they had Loomis make some GL3s.

Curt, I have all three of the Loomis rods discussed, with a few exceptions. My 1084 is a GL3 and I my 1141 is a stock spinner, not rebuilt like Eric's. If you're looking at a summer-run stick for this state, then I'd shy away from the 1143. In my opinion it's a bit too stiff, and has quite a bit of "meat" to it. I've landed fall kings with this one, nuff said.
As for the other two (1141 & 1084); both are excellent rods. And, in all honesty, I can't give a direct, unbiased comparison because the 1141 spinner I use for freedriftin' bait, while the 1084 caster is my summer-run drift rod. I will say this though, unless you're willing to have a 1141 customized into a caster, I'll endorse the 1084. I use #4 and #2 gammies tied with 6lb and 8lb ultragreen leaders, respectively, with no problems. The rod also has enough bone to accomodate a #1, for the penisula's summer brats.
