well i know averyone on here fishes gloomis. In fact I lucked out and inherited one. My problem now is that I need another casting rod. Im looking for something in the 10 to 20 lb range. I would like the ability to use floats as well as standard drift gear
since the guy at the "outlet" tackle store thinks the only rod in existence is the gloomis maybe you guys can help.

P.S. Are the lower grade loomis rods just as good ( gl2, etc.)

I had a gl2 float rod 10.5' which I no longer have . Even your float fishing rod should be sensitive so you can stay in touch with your gear. I built a cabelas float rod that doubles as a drift rod in a pinch. The rod is more sensitive than the gl2 and much cheaper. If your trying to save a buck that is the way to go. Others on the board have recommend a Lamiglas signature rod by Herzog. If you plan on float fishing you will want the longer rod.

check out the pac-bays, they are IM6 and made on loomis mandrels, a great rod.

I think the lower grade GL2s are the way to go for the heavy action rods. They're a little heavier and can take more punishment, without sacrificing much in the way of sensitivity. Much cheaper as well. I have the GL2 1021c (10-20lb test) and use it for most salmon fishing. Its your standard 8.5 footer so would not provide you much advantage fishing floats.

If you want to go the Canadian way, the GL2 1363c ?? is a 10-20lb rod thats 11'4". I borrowed a friends and had a blast with it fishing floats for fall kings on the Vedder River this past fall. Now I have to scounge up enough money to buy one.

For steelhead though, I like the GL3s in the medium actions and Lamiglass in light actions.

I have a GL2 spinning rod in 10#-20#, and I agree that it doesn't have the sensitivity you would want for the methods of fishing you mention. But it works great for cast-and-retrieve fishing, and, for example, I'm looking forward to using it on this summer's musky and trophy pike fishing adventure.

I also agree with simlesforu that you can get a rod that would be cheaper than the GL2 and better for the way you want to use it.

Try the Cabelas XML 10ft rated for 10 to 20lb. I've been impressed with the quality of the blanks for the price. I built one of the XML 10ft 8 to 15lb and really like it.
