The Calawah is my favorite but I can't give away my best spots. Do some exploring. Febuary is usually a good month on the Calawah. You might have to do some hiking.

Seadog, another good bet is the Hoh above Hwy.101, lots of access and some great drifts, as for your sealion problem, a couple of things I've learned as a guide in Alaska is if you see them before they get the fish either yard them right into the boat with a net ready to scoop or another idea which may not work as well here with our barbless hook law but has worked there is to free spool your reel with a little thumb pressure to keep from backlashing, the idea is to let the fish swim on his own where he can potentially escape the sealion, I know this goes against everything were taught about keeping pressure on a fish but this may be the only chance you have of getting the fish, where as if that fish is fighting you and has a sealion on his tail all you'll get is a head and a sealion feeding show. I've had clients in Ak. do this a number of times and I get about 40-50% of them although we do have the advantage of barbed hooks, good fishing

Has any one tried hiking up from the mouth of the Sol Duc? I always wanted to give it a try but never got around to it! Just curious if anyone has done it. Thanks in advance!

You can gain alot of bank access on the lower Sol Duc on both the 3000 and 2500 roads off of La Push RD.

Hey Seadog,

I notice you live in Clinton; I am going to be in Freeland for a week towards the end of March, was wondering if you could give me some advice on going after Blackmouth. You could either reply here, or send me an E-Mail at tiegs@micron.net. Appreciate any help you might give.

Hey seadog, if you don't want to drive as far, you can drive through Shelton and fish the upper forks of the humptulips river off Hwy 101 near the town of Humptulips. You can walk for miles on the west fork and you won't have much competition. I've hooked a fair # of natives earlier this month and they should be spread out quite a bit in there now. You should have some luck and learn some new water. Just turn off Hwy 101 at the Donkey Creek rd. Drive until you see the river. You might also want to check the regs.
